Jay Leno slams nurses!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I *just* watched Jay Leno make a really rude comment about nurses- it went something to the effect of... " you know nurses are the most overworked profession in America... especially in those adult movies" GRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!

Nurses are not Bimbos, Mr. Leno!!!!!! :angryfire :angryfire :angryfire :nurse: :nurse: :nurse: :flamesonb :flamesonb

You make perfect sense, Tweety. I understand what you are saying, and do agree with it. While I don't think saying, "It's only a joke" is insulting, the "get a life" part of it is.

However, you are right. It's not about the way I see things, but how others see them. Funny, my mom and I were just talking about this very thing last night.

I'll leave the Bush comment alone, though.......

:blushkiss :coollook: :rotfl:

Please, let's leave the Bush comment out of it. It's just an example. :)

There's nothing wrong with telling a joke, and when someone says "that joke is insulting" answering with "I'm sorry, it's only a joke, but I respect your feelings..." or something like that is completely appropriate. But "it's only a joke, geez, get a life, join the 20th century, this political correctness stuff has gotten out of hand, it's only a joke for Gods sake" is immature and disrepctful.

Jokes can be a delicate thing.

Yep, I did start it and my apologies to the readers of the thread for going off topic. I was trying to come up with an example of a type of thinking that's foreign to me, but yet I have to be respectful of.

I kinda figured that it was just an example......besides, I don't discuss politics with anyone but my family....it can get too volatile.

I know what you mean. I was with a coworker having lunch the other day and he was going off about work conditions, "and I'm a republican...." and I quickly said "let's not go there....please, I will leave if you do"....and he politely shut up. :D

I don't discuss politics cause it makes me go to sleep.:D

It can get too volatile if I discuss with MY family - my Dad is a union guy through and through and votes Democrat. My mom never voted but is kind of one of those "circumstances alter all cases" person who never draws a line anywhere. Sometimes I feel like I must have been adopted.

There was a great thread sometime this last year that I think Tweety started or at least contributed mightily to - regarding jokes and sensitivity.

I think the nursing industry will always be linked to the adult industry. It will take several generations to clear that one up. Whoever came up with it sure made it stick.

As someone else said every profession has their share of jokes. We americans make fun of every career even the President. I honestly think it's a joke and it doesn't bother me the list bit. Women cops have been linked to the Media industry as well and they get more sexually harassed than nurses about it IMHO.

It's not just in the movie industry. There was that horrible commericial for a men's cologne that played for a few weeks (haven't seen it recently). It showed a "patient" putting on the the cologne and having a sterotypical"bimbo" nurse coming into his room and getting turned on.

Sounds like an Axe commercial. I can't remember if it was or not, i just remember seeing it one time, on network TV. Which was too many.

He's just repeating a common cultural stereotype.

What do you expect when that's the only media image of nurses you see? Have you ever seen ER? The real work is done by doctors - nurses just stand in the wings and wait for when one of the stars need a girlfriend.

That's not true! There are some nurses on ER that are portrayed as being more competent than the doctors! Nurse Hathoway for example. She's a tough, no-nonsense, hardworking nurse. There's also a nurse (Haleh Adams) thats been on the show since the pilot who is also shown as an excellent nurse. Now don't get me wrong, I know how glamorized and distorted the plots are, but I still think there are characters who represent what a good nurse should be.

And about the Jay Leno thing, chill out! It's JAY LENO, that's what he does. He could have said the same exact thing about school teachers. It wasn't meant to be derogatory, and you shouldn't take something like that to heart. I'm not a nurse yet, so maybe you're all thinking: Well she just doesn't understand. But my mother's a nurse, and trust me I have nothing but respect and admiration for what she does. I'm a female at a military college, so I've certainly learned which jokes are worth getting upset over.

To me, it wasn't meant to be degrading, but it is degrading IMO.
