Jay Leno slams nurses!

I *just* watched Jay Leno make a really rude comment about nurses- it went something to the effect of... " you know nurses are the most overworked profession in America... especially in those adult movies" GRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!

... a context in which he pokes fun at everything. "The Tonight Show" monolog has been a national tradition for over 30 years .... first with Steve Allen, then Jack Parr, then Johnny Carson, now Jay Leno. The monolog pokes fun at national institutions, public figures, etc. -- everybody gets a little teasing equally -- especially the high and mighty.

If we nurses can't take a little gentle ribbing from such a respected and traditional source, then we have a problem.

One sign of self-assurance is the ability to make fun of yourself now and then. If we lose that, we will truly make ourselves look silly.

We need to pick our battles carefully.

Criticism's one thing, insulting or "giving someone crap" over something is another.

It's not how it works here. Read your terms of service.

It may be sociology but bullying and giving crap isn't allowed here. We don't criticize each other for how we feel. In fact we're not allowed to criticize each other at all for the most part, at least not by saying things like "act like you're stuck int he 50's by refusing to tolerate a realatively harmless joke".

Again, I say what's a relatively harmless joke to one person, say a bunch of straight guys in a bar gay-bashing, or nurse bashing, may be inappropriate to someone else. What's wrong with keeping such comments out of it and respecting the "weirdo" who is insulted?

Seems like the group mentality of keeping wierdo's at bay is so 50's and immature, even if it's a sociological phenomenon documented in textbooks and I don't have to accept it. Call me a weirdo but I don't always march to societies drum. I decide what is a funny and a joke to me, not you or Jay Leno, or anyone else.

Yes, being different will get you the wrath of society, that's just the way it is. Story of my life. But you still can't do it here. :)

There's a difference between disagreeing with your opinion and saying you shouldn't express it at all.

Having read through this thread, I find myself agreeing with the posters who have suggested that you're giving too much weight to the words of a comedian. If he were a public policy maker and he tried to pass off his comments as fact, I'd say that's worth a challenge or two. But Jay Leno is a man who, by definition, makes jokes at others' expense. If you want to take offense, no one's going to stop you, but in my opinion, you give his comments MORE significance by drawing attention to them rather than simply dismissing them as the silliness they are.

ITA. And I also agree with the other poster who stated that Jay wasn't bashing nurses per se, but rather making fun of the fact that "nurses" (and pizza delivery guys, or the pool cleaning boy) are often portrayed in those kinds of movies.

To be completely honest, I also don't see why people are getting so worked up over who got offended and who didn't.

In the great, grand scheme of things, does this really matter? Do you really think anyone watching Leno late at night heard that joke and thought to themselves...."Yep, all them nurses are Media stars, they don't really do anything important."

But I will say this, even if it's off topic.....yes, you are allowed to express your opinion. But so is the guy next to you. I can't see how it's against the TOS telling someone "It's just a joke, lady". I honestly don't see how anyone was truly criticizing anyone else here.

Everybody knew it was a joke: there is no chance that anyone in his right mind took it seriously. We need to not take it too seriously, either.

It doesn't matter how things appear, it matters how they are.

It is not worth a minute of your time concerning yourself with what people think of you, or your profession. What matter is: are you doing your job with integrity? Do you take pride in your discipline?

I know you are offended because you are good nurses. But in the scheme of things, this does not diminish you, or detract from the value of what you do, in any way.

I'm not a moderator. I think if it was a violation of the TOS it would be removed. The tone is very disrespectful and while you don't see it, I do see it has a criticism not only of the idea that they are insulted but the person themselves for being insulted in the first place.

And it's immmature. Rather than say something like "I take it as a joke, and I'm not bothered by it personally" it's immature and unproductive, and disrespectful to say with "get a life it's only a joke lady, you're stuck in the 50s" (as an example not a direct quote of anyone here). In my opinion of course. :)

That's my point. Other than the point that just because I don't understand why someone is insulted, doesn't invalidate their feelings of being being insulted.

Just as a report of pain is subjective in a patient, a report of being insulted is subjective to the person. I may not be insulted, but why force someone into thinking my way by saying "get a life it's only a joke". Perhaps I should stop and think, "hmmm...........this person is insulted, let me take a look at that, and respect it".

God knows I have strong feelings about how someone else feels. I personally can't for the life of me understand how more than 50% of Americans voted for Bush, I just don't see it.
