I *just* watched Jay Leno make a really rude comment about nurses- it went something to the effect of... " you know nurses are the most overworked profession in America... especially in those adult movies" GRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!
Nurses are not Bimbos, Mr. Leno!!!!!! :angryfire :angryfire :angryfire :nurse:
:flamesonb :flamesonb
not really, if she refuses to change her attitude about something so trivial she should expect responses like that. geez lady it was just a joke!
There are a lot of jokes out there, we all live different lives and what is a joke is offensive to others. It's not fair to say "it's a joke, get a life, geez lady".
Jokes that stereotype be they nurses jokes, gay jokes, racist jokes, blond jokes, Pollack jokes, etc. don't necessary bother me but usually don't laugh either. I can understand why someone would be offended, and certainly wouldn't negate their feelings by saying "geez lady it was just a joke".
fyi: the tv show, "er," has a new character on it that may actually portray nurses in a better light. she is the new nurse manager with a phd. she's very very knowledgeable and feisty. she has no qualms about correcting the residents! she's a bit overbearing but i think you all will like her.
So comedians can't make jokes about your career? Excatly what can he make fun of, do you have a list?, He was just excersizing his right to free speech, something so many it this "politically correct society" - I really hate that word - have forgotten. It always funny until it's about you. If you don't like his humor, turn of the TV. Remember he is a comedian, you wouldn't want him telling you how to do your job, leave him alone about his.
Well, this may be :offtopic: on my part, yet related IMHO...
If I see someone exercising there freedom of speech by physically disrespecting the US flag, you can bet it will be that persons last time doing such around me. Point is, Leno has the right to say almost any joke he wants, yet if some nurses [self included] don't appreciate such belittling humor towards the nursing profession, then yea, we can change the channel ... plus, speak out against such, too. :)
Here is my offering to those that need such after reading this entire Thread...

The joke (which I didn't hear) dosen't really bother me either since it was "just" Jay Leno. He make fun of everyone and everything- that is his job- everytime I have watched Jay Leno (which is never- I don't even think I have seen one show) he is making fun of someone or something and playing on stereotypes- not that that makes it right. It would bother me more if CNN or someone people actually believe/listen to made a comment along those lines. I don't know. The whole nursing in Media thing dosen't really bother me. I know I am not a Media star. The majority of the public knows that nurses aren't Media stars. It is just of one of those weird fantasies the public has derived to make a bad situation (being in the hospital) more tolerable (yes, by exploiting women- which is a another debate...).Anyway, everyone is entitiled to their own opinion. In my opinion- I do'nt really care about Jay Leno and would rather be annoyed at other issues.
Yup, I'm with you. That's his job. He's not a anchor for CNN bound to report the truth... he's a comedian. Comedians exploit stereotypes for laughs_ that's what they do. Doesn't bother me at all.

I agree with you. However, I have to respectfully consider that others are offended and give them that right. It's a big world out there and everyone doesn't have to share our opinion.

There was a recent episode of "House" in which a patient told the young doctors that he had not urinated in over "24 hours". it really struck me that there were no nurses around and that this should have been picked up by the nurses and not the doctors. I do like the learning aspect of this show and how they all brainstorm to diagnose really bizarre cases. But is is unrealistic not to have nurses around. I have been tempted to write to the shows producers.
All of these so called medical shows have a medical advisor. I see many things wrong that I often think one could easily be a medical advisor. ONe pet peeve I have is that no one ever has bedrails up on tv!! A bit unrealistic I beleive.
