January 6 Select Committee

Published

Things seem to be unfolding rather quickly. Former White House aides and advisors are scrambling to cover themselves as they receive subpoenas to appear and produce documents.

It’s rare when lawyers — as opposed to their clients — take the Fifth Amendment. But Jeffrey Clark, the former Justice Department lawyer who reportedly tried to help Donald Trump overturn the 2020 presidential election, is now claiming the privilege against self-incrimination to avoid testifying before the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. He has just been joined in that posture by one of Trump’s main outside legal advisers, John Eastman.

The lawsuit comes after the committee signaled it would pursue a criminal contempt referral against Meadows because of his refusal to sit for a deposition in the investigation into the Capitol riot. Meadows alleges that the subpoenas are "overly broad and unduly burdensome," while claiming that the committee "lacks lawful authority to seek and to obtain" the information requested.

And apparently Mark Meadows had a power point outlining how to overturn election results.

The 38-page presentation, entitled "Election Fraud, Foreign Interference & Options for 6 Jan," is dated one day before the Capitol riot. It's believed to have been submitted by Meadows after he was subpoenaed by the panel in connection with the insurrection.

Only the finest people...

Noted.  I will command my fingers to do the extra typing.  I had no idea that Dems was derogatory.

Thanks   At first I only saw "Dems" on Fox News and certain posters here so I didn't like it.   But I think it is a mainstream term and not an insult, just sounds like one   LOL

It was interesting that Gingrich's gas lighting didn't specify the laws that he believes are being trampled that would result in legal consequences for those investigating the events leading to the violent attempt to nullify the presidential election results. It's also interesting that for someone expressing concern about law and order, he seems comfortable with the law breaking and disorder that followed Trump's rally on 010621.

Yes I took notice he didn't say what they would go to jail for.

Like before even if nothing is found I think there's justification for the investigation.

You do.  And, you differentiate between Republican, conservative, and Trump supporter, as they are not necessarily interchangeable.

Thank you for both.

I have also differentiated between "Trumpers" and conservatives.  I am alarmed that so many of the true, definitional and thinking conservatives have left or are leaving Congress.  Conservatism is not being represented by the Republicans who are making the news today.  I have said that repeatedly that "Trumpers" are NOT followers of true conservatism.

What investigation is justified? Certainly the investigation into the attempted coup is justified, there should be no question about that despite what Mr Gingrich implies.  It's important to remember that Gingrich is a self serving liar in both his personal and political life.  Newt is, conceivably, the corrupt liar who laid the foundational dishonesty and corruption in the RNC that ultimately resulted in Trump's elevation within the Republican party.

...

@chare Most comments in these threads don't include the term "Trumpers". Most comments discussing the beliefs and behaviors of the crowd that believe and trust Trump don't include the term "Trumpers". Is there something extra special or extra offensive about that term? How many times do members here need to define that term for people? Are you concerned that you are considered to be a Trumper even though you don't post unequivocal support of the twice impeached liar and spread his nonsense?

um...the investigation that is the topic of this thread.

I don't think it's a "witch hunt" or a "lynch mob".  It's a worthwhile investigation.

I wanted to make sure that you weren't referencing the imaginary investigation into the necessary investigation that Gingrich had imagined.

No worries about that.  LOL

Funny is that during the Clinton years I didn't mind him. I thought he was at the top of his game then. Every president deserves a nemesis that leads the other parties agenda, he did a good job at that. I disagreed with everything he said and did back then.  But they got things done and the economy was good.

That he is now a babbling fool pushing the Fox News and Trump agenda is very disappointing.

Actually, I think it goes back to Nixon, Spiro Agnew and saint Ronnie. Newt simply stood on their shoulders.

Election denier who circulated Jan. 6 PowerPoint says he met with Meadows at White House

A retired U.S. Army colonel who circulated a proposal to challenge the 2020 election, including by declaring a national security emergency and seizing paper ballots, said that he visited the White House on multiple occasions after the election, spoke with President Donald Trump’s chief of staff “maybe eight to 10 times” and briefed several members of Congress on the eve of the Jan. 6 riot.
Phil Waldron, the retired colonel, was working with Trump’s outside lawyers and was part of a team that briefed the lawmakers on a PowerPoint presentation detailing “Options for 6 JAN,” Waldron told The Washington Post. He said his contribution to the presentation focused on his claims of foreign interference in the vote, as did his discussions with the White House.
A version of the presentation made its way to the White House chief of staff, Mark Meadows, on Jan. 5. That information surfaced publicly this past week after the congressional committee investigating the insurrection released a letter that said Meadows had turned the document over to the committee.

Quote

Waldron said in the interview that he traveled to Washington around Nov. 9 or 10, 2020, and first met a few days later with Giuliani and Giuliani’s associate Bernard Kerik, a former New York City police commissioner.
Waldron said he joined the Pennsylvania lawmakers in the Nov. 25 meeting with Trump in the Oval Office. During that period, the president was meeting with legislators from key states and urging them to reject the official vote counts in their states, according to previous reports.

There is so much evidence that Trump was desperate to use any means to retain the power he lost in the election.

Former Vice President Mike Pence called out his former boss by name on Friday, saying that "President (Donald) Trump is wrong" in claiming that Pence had the right to overturn the 2020 election on January 6, 2021.

Speaking at the Federalist Society Florida Chapters conference near Orlando, Pence delivered his strongest response yet to Trump's ongoing efforts to relitigate the 2020 presidential election, calling it "un-American" to suggest one person could have decided the outcome.

The Republican National Committee censured two GOP lawmakers on Friday for participating on the committee investigating the violent Jan. 6 insurrection and assailed the panel for leading a “persecution of ordinary citizens engaged in legitimate political discourse.”

Of course, when questioned, the RNC Chairperson denied that "legitimate public discourse" referred to the attack on the capital. I suppose "fight like hell" and "taking names and kicking @$$" was just political rhetoric.

And the  photographed evidence just reflects patriot tourists who came just to peacefully demonstrate?  How do they explain that and how dumb do they think we are?
