January 6 Select Committee

Published

Things seem to be unfolding rather quickly. Former White House aides and advisors are scrambling to cover themselves as they receive subpoenas to appear and produce documents.

It’s rare when lawyers — as opposed to their clients — take the Fifth Amendment. But Jeffrey Clark, the former Justice Department lawyer who reportedly tried to help Donald Trump overturn the 2020 presidential election, is now claiming the privilege against self-incrimination to avoid testifying before the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. He has just been joined in that posture by one of Trump’s main outside legal advisers, John Eastman.

The lawsuit comes after the committee signaled it would pursue a criminal contempt referral against Meadows because of his refusal to sit for a deposition in the investigation into the Capitol riot. Meadows alleges that the subpoenas are "overly broad and unduly burdensome," while claiming that the committee "lacks lawful authority to seek and to obtain" the information requested.

And apparently Mark Meadows had a power point outlining how to overturn election results.

The 38-page presentation, entitled "Election Fraud, Foreign Interference & Options for 6 Jan," is dated one day before the Capitol riot. It's believed to have been submitted by Meadows after he was subpoenaed by the panel in connection with the insurrection.

A running list of who the January 6 committee has subpoenaed or requested to appear

Appears that concentric rings of those having access to inner WH office and Trump, tightening to those closest to Trump promoting the "Big Lie" that Trump won using false information voiced to the public.  I expect hearings to be BIG like the Watergate Hearings that I was glued to as worked nights, slept evenings.  Horray for today's easy auto TV recordings.

Unless marshalls go to the folks who are resisting making appearances, all these efforts will be for nothing.  The Dems have been feckless so far.  If they need to be rounded up in handcuffs, please just let it begin now.

By an 8-1 vote, the Supreme Court permitting National Archives to release 750 pages of President Trump's WH documents relating to the January 6th Capital building attack. Among the records being sought by the committee were White House notes, call and visitor logs from on and around Jan. 6.

Both CNN and the Washington Post are reporting that Giuliani and others involved in the former guy's re-election campaign had a hand in creating the the fake electors and fake certificates that were sent to the National Archives.

I wonder if Rudy's old client will be willing to kick in for legal fees now. You know, to keep a little canary from singing.

Again, your hatred fir Trump is blinding you..

This is all designed to keep Trump from running.  If that happens, it's possible a better candidate, like DeSantis, ends up with the nomination.

A better candidate,  pissed off Trump supporters, and who knows what Democrat....you all better be careful for what you're asking for.

No, not paying workers is a very old MO for him and he won't change now.  He thinks that his sheer magnetism will pull him out of the muck.  A person who steals from charity will never make it a priority to pay a lowly lawyer.

I think this designed to uncover what was really behind the events that unfolded on January 6, 2021.
I am realistic to expect Trump to avoid any sort of consequences and to run again. And with the way voting laws are changing, he could win.

It's interesting that you believe the primary purpose of the Select Committee is to keep Trump from running for office.  It's almost like you don't think anything important happened on 01062021 that should be investigated and remedied in a timely and public fashion.

Pissed off Trump supporters are a given, grievance is one of the things that unites people behind Trump.  This is what I'm asking for; exposure of the plans and agendas which undermine our democratic processes and accountability for the most powerful people in our country who are subverting our elections and who contributed to the events of 01062021. Why should I be careful about asking for that?

And I will happily, enthusiastically take DeSantis as President after Trump wasn't allowed to run because of his overt opposition to the basic principles of Democracy rather than a Democrat win over a candidate Trump who was allowed to run for President.  The difference would be a democratic candidate win in a now failed democracy vs a republican win in a healthy democracy.

I'm certain that I wouldn't be enthusiastic about a president Desantis but his decisions relative to COVID might not inspire as many voters as he would prefer.  Unfortunately, many of the Republican politicians who might run for the presidency have some interesting recent history to consider while they might campaign.

I don't think that people are blinded with Trump hate to make something up to bring him down.  If there is something they want it uncovered.  My guess is like before people around him might fall but he himself will come out fine.

I think that there are some people blinded with devotion to him they believe that he possibly can't do anything unethical and it's true that the election was stolen and fraudulent.

The "angry Trump voter" has showed up at rallies all over the place and yes they are a force to be reckoned with and not necessarily dismissed as a fringe bunch of lunatics. Republicans themselves have to deal with them and are making some steps to try and convince them that Trump lost.  But Trump himself won't shut up about it.

About DeSantis. His covid policies of ending the lockdown, even though it was it preceded a deadly surge in 2020 is wildly popular with Republicans voters.  His statements recently that we are the most free state in the Country shows how he will campaign on that issue.  He lost people when he started taking on schools and even Republicans think schools should decide for themselves whether to mask, etc.  But doubtful that will be a big campaign issue.

Even though he focuses on issues that aren't all that important like "wokeness", that during his watch a million covid test kits expired, etc. Latest polls show him easily winning re-election here, where as last election it was too close to call.

Sure. Desantis would do fine with republicans.  Trump proved twice that it's nearly impossible to win the popular vote with just republicans voting for you. Here's an analysis of the trends by Philip Bump.
