I recognized someone from the picture they're using as their avatar. Moreover, it's someone I'm responsible for evaluating. And what they're posting is not consistent with a good attitude or safe practice. I can easily see why they're having so many issues with their colleagues. And the amazing thing is that clearly they think they're doing just great and everyone ELSE is the problem!

Now what? I'd already written up the evaluation, but the pages I've printed off allnurses.com complete with the person's picture clearly support my conclusions. Do I include them? Or shred them and pretend I've never looked at allnurses.com?

Will it help if I tell you that my boss reads allnurses religiously? She's probably also seen the picture and the posts.

I would check policy about using online or outside work materials. You could be buying a mess.

Wow! But can you be positive about his/her identity? I would let your evaluation stand on it's own without adding what you printed.

However, if they have without doubt, identified themselves and/or your facility in a negative manner on social media, I would definitely mention it in my evaluation.

There's no way I would include the posts in your eval. If you said the posts are consistent with what you've seen at work, this shouldn't be an issue as it shouldn't effect the overall result much.

Agreed. If anything it just validates your thoughts even more.

However if any issues arise from your evaluation, have copies in hand!

I would discuss it with your boss, off the record. What are your school policies about social networks? And as Blondy says, if you saw those negative behaviors or attitudes, isn't that already in your evaluation? If not, I don't think you can go back and change anything.

If the student has violated school policies, I would think that could be addressed separately.

As stupid as it was to use her picture as her avitar, allnurses is supposed to be anonymous and I think it would be unfair to use that against her

When I first signed up, many years ago, I was not involved in teaching. My user name is not as anonymous as I had thought, and I've overheard some of my students say they know who I am on here "it isn't her name, but you can tell it's her". There is no real anonymity on the web.

I think you should keep it in mind but don't let them know what you saw. I think it may look unprofessional a bit. Many people post out of anger and to vent. They obviously made a mistake by putting their picture up. It is actually sounds like a very sticky situation... I hope it works out.

I think I would go to your boss and discuss it with her. Show her the materials and be prepared to give an opinion about using it. When you meet with her i think you should have your boss present. Instead of including it in the eval I think the boss needs to discuss social media and how it can and will negatively impact her life. Show her the writings and explain that it is an open site and could be seen by her patients and other staff members. It reflects negatively and even though it is not part of the evaluation you have created the boss may have other ideas.

Your job is to eval performance. Your boss has the job of protecting the institution's reputation and you are taking the material to her for her input in that regard

And it's extremely naive to believe that this forum is "supposed to be anonymous" anymore than anywhere else online is really anonymous. Using a pseudonym doesn't make someone invisible. And with this she used a PHOTO of herself??

People leave trails a blind man could follow in a snowstorm and then wonder why they got caught.

Anonymity on the internet is never a guarantee. Many facilities require employees to sign off on the social media policy. Basically, anything that you say about work that can be attributed to you can cause you problems. Had this happen with a major event where I worked, where someone posted details that hadn't been released to the general public, and suffered some pretty serious consequences. After that, we all had to review and re-sign the policy.

By using her real picture, this person completely threw anonymity out the window. As the saying goes, anything you say can and will be used against you.

Good tip to keep in mind: if you wouldn't say it publicly, don't say it on the internet even if you think you are doing so anonymously.
