I wore my white uniform and nurse's cap to work today. The compliments continued throughout my shift, but the MOST important compliment came from a young lad in elementary school. His mother approached me in the hallway, and said "I just wanted to let you know that my son was tickled pink to see you in your uniform. He got all excited, and said 'Mommy, Look! A real nurse! She's got the real nurse uniform on, and the real nurse hat, too!' :blushkiss
Wasn't that too precious! :) I told the mother thanks, and to let her son know we are looking forward to welcoming him into the nursing field one day.
Folks, if it weren't for the ironing required, I'd wear white and my cap every time I work. People truly DO care about what the "real nurse" wears.
Check out your responses tomorrow. It's after eleven at night, and I'm pooped for real. Nighty night ya'll!

Good for you Cheerful. It's amazing how much enjoyment you're getting out of you cap. I bought a white scrub shirt that is Dickies Brand. I've only worn it twice, but it seems ok without ironing. Maybe you could try this brand and save yourself from ironing.
Thank you Noney. I'll check out the Dickies Brand scrub shirt. :)
One day I may purchase another two white uniforms since I only own one, but my paychecks right are mostly being spent on my kids and grandkids. I'm having sooooooo much fun shopping for them now that I'm back to work, and I am NOT ready to give that up just yet. I don't like shopping for myself much, but let me loose in a Carter's or Osh Gosh store and there's no holding me back. :chuckle
As for wearing the white uniform and nurse cap, I like the comments I get by visitors, patients, and staff...even a few doctors paid me some very nice comments, too. :) I'll keep wearing it, but just not all the time. I get in the mood to wear it, and so I wear it. The thing is.....I have the choice to wear it or not wear it, and I like that very much.

I would be afraid the bobby pins holding the cap on would cause hair loss.

Cheerfuldoer,
I just purchased my white nurses cap today. I want to wear it in the photo I will take for graduation. I can't wait to wear it when I go to work. I've actually never seen a nurse wear one in the work setting. I think the cap and the white uniform will set me apart from my peers and will make me distinguishable from the other health care personnel I will work with. If I do something right (or wrong) there will be no doubt who the patient is talking about when he or she says "the nurse in the white uniform and the cap.
p.s. If I could get my hands on a cape, I'd wear that too!!!

I too enjoy the cap and whites. I never go 8 hours without positive feedback from pts., families, and auxillary. I wear scrubs for weekend work and holidays. Other than that it is whites and cap.
I am the only one in my hospital that does . There fore it is true I must keep my act straight right or wrong. I also get a little lip from our "Frequent Fliers" when they arrive on a weekend or holiday
and I have on scrubs. I believe all should have the choice of what they wear and enjoy it. I do!
nggirl2002.......Hello and welcome to allnurses! It gets pretty addicting here, but you'll have fun, cry, laugh, make cyber friends and possibly meet some in person like I have, and even become more educated by all the experience posted on allnurses!
It's good to hear there are other nurses who desire to wear the cap and white uniform even if there are those you will work with who will not like the idea. I plan to continue wearing mine when I can. I'll soon be doing homehealth visits, and working per diem for a couple area hospitals soon, and I won't hesitate to wear my whites. I'm also going to take a travel nurse assignment eventually, and will wear my whites for those contract assignments too. :)
SherRN..........I agree that we should have a choice to wear what we want as long as we look professional in what we wear. :)
Good to see my post on caps and white uniforms brought forth again!

Caps = Real Nurse..... I have a huge problem with that.
In the over 30 years in Nursing I have never worn a cap, including Nursing school. Does that mean I have wasted 30 years and am not a real nurse?
Should the aprons be brought back also?
Its a shame that this historical stereotype continuesto be reinforced.

Its wonderful to read that so many nurses around the world want to wear a white uniform and a cap!
Call me OLDFASHIONED, BUT specially in geriatric nursing the pt love to see A REAL NURSE! I often use cap and a special uniform at x-mas time or spesciel occations. And Its enormesly positive respons!
My favorite hobby is nursing history: and to look back and see what kiind of uniform did fekx. Florence Nightingale weare? She had spescial opinions; they must not be to "sexy" (she didnt use that word, but..), they had to be functional, and the crinoline in the Victorian time was taken out of FN uniform, just for better comfort at work.
Yes, that at good point: comfortable: its a working habit, but we have as nurses a history and tradition witch is very importing to care about!
I often get som odd faces when I tell people that I am a nursing uniform collector! They think its something sexual, fetisj or something wrong. But I want to take care about our history! Right now its English uniforms that are in focus, and they are conservative, exsactly as Florence and the military under the Krimien war. I dont use them, but every habit has a story!
Last time I were in London, I bought many different caps, and in my appartement I am decorating with these feks. over some nursing books from anticqs store. l LOVE IT!
KEEP USING YOUR WHITE UNIFORM AND CAPS (AND BATCH) AND BE PROUD OF YOUR PROFESSION!
DO YOU TNINK I AM A LITTLE BIT STRANGE OR ODD OR CRAZY?
all best from FLORRY:nurse:
