It's Allllllllll In The Nurse's Cap!

Published

I wore my white uniform and nurse's cap to work today. The compliments continued throughout my shift, but the MOST important compliment came from a young lad in elementary school. His mother approached me in the hallway, and said "I just wanted to let you know that my son was tickled pink to see you in your uniform. He got all excited, and said 'Mommy, Look! A real nurse! She's got the real nurse uniform on, and the real nurse hat, too!' :blushkiss

Wasn't that too precious! :) I told the mother thanks, and to let her son know we are looking forward to welcoming him into the nursing field one day. ;)

Folks, if it weren't for the ironing required, I'd wear white and my cap every time I work. People truly DO care about what the "real nurse" wears.

Check out your responses tomorrow. It's after eleven at night, and I'm pooped for real. Nighty night ya'll!

There is something about the traditional wear. It can't be beat. It brings immediate comfort to sick people. Keep wearing it.

Thanks for the tip. :) I like style 526 and will give them a call in the next few days...any idea what caps typically cost? Kay's Caps doesn't list any prices.

I wish I had the nerve to wear my nursing cap that I worked so hard to get. I'm afraid I would be teased if I did. I always admire nurses who wear thier cap. I it makes you feel good, wear it and be PROUD!

Is this a "generational" thing? The only reason I ask is because one job I recently interviewed for in L&D was at a hospital that more resembled a nursing home. As I was walking back to my car, I saw a middle-aged nurse in full white uniform, dress, and cap wheeling an elderly patient out to their car. I don't know, maybe it's also a geographical thing, as this was in California. But I thought I was in a time warp to 1960. The hospital just seemed too outdated for my taste and I withdrew my application.

However, I do want to say, I remember when I was a kid, how cool I thought the nursing uniforms were too! But that was also the time I thought that nurses basically just gave shots, made beds, and wiped butts! Maybe that’s the reason I cringe at the thought of wearing the traditional uniform today; I associate it with all those old stereotypes of nursing care without having all the technical skills and knowledge.

Hi SheRN,

This is off the subject, but I saw your quote (

ReExamine all you have been told---

dismiss that which insults your soul.)

while reading these posts...

I'm just a first year student and dont know much about nursing yet...

But I am pretty sure that quote is Walt Whitman, from Leaves of Grass.

It's a good one for sure.

I'm surprised at the popularity of caps on this site!

I'm in my first year of school, but my prof and my text both mentioned that caps are out of fashion because they can harbor bacteria and are a possible souce of contamination (esp during sterile procedures). Has anyone else heard that?

Yes, when you are working with immunsuppresive pt and doing aceptic procedure, you'll were a cap for use in the operation theater.

Usually I dont were "this old-fash. uniform and cap", because we have our hospital uniform reglement, - and OFTEN use caps for or-nurses.

BUT: If its spes. occ. I usually were caps and one of my 40 uniforms....., depends of the occ. I am working at a hospital were the Queen is our "highest protector", and when she is cooming; I love using my finest uniform. On our National day, I also were a spec. uniform. X-mas time and other occ. The pt LOVE IT!!!

I think we have to use common sence, and assess the situation!

I can understand that some "young" nurses have bad memories about this cold and white nurse (as in the movie The coccu nest" (maybe spelled wrong), but that was 40 years ago, and the attitude to the pt is absolutely different now!!

Best wishes and be yourself

How awesome that the young boy noticed that!!!!!

My son told me the other day "mama when i'm a nurse i wanna wear a spiderman nurse shirt"

I think whites and cap are awesome and knew a nurse that wore them during my nursing school clinicals.

try EBAY for a nurses cap.

Good idea...they have a variety of styles, most from Kay's Caps and its a way of getting around the rather large minimum order at Kay's.

I just ordered 20 caps for my graduating class and will be putting ribbon on them as soon as they arrive--probably Tuesday or Wednesday. I'm glad we got it together for our pinning ceremony, because I really did want a cap. I may even wear mine occasionally and not just have it for a memento. I will put it on for a graduation photo in any event.
