It's Allllllllll In The Nurse's Cap!

Published

I wore my white uniform and nurse's cap to work today. The compliments continued throughout my shift, but the MOST important compliment came from a young lad in elementary school. His mother approached me in the hallway, and said "I just wanted to let you know that my son was tickled pink to see you in your uniform. He got all excited, and said 'Mommy, Look! A real nurse! She's got the real nurse uniform on, and the real nurse hat, too!' :blushkiss

Wasn't that too precious! :) I told the mother thanks, and to let her son know we are looking forward to welcoming him into the nursing field one day. ;)

Folks, if it weren't for the ironing required, I'd wear white and my cap every time I work. People truly DO care about what the "real nurse" wears.

Check out your responses tomorrow. It's after eleven at night, and I'm pooped for real. Nighty night ya'll!

I'm sure nurses would look more professional if they wore caps and whites, and they probably would receive better treatment.

I think it looks awesome.

I just cannot stand the thought of pinning that stiff thing on my head. If it gets caught in something.........ouch!!!

I can understand that its uncomfortable to use this old-fash. type of uniform, and certainly, you dont were such uniforms on daily basis: BUT;

Sometimes, and by spesc. occations,x-mas, easter, national day, I think it VERY APPRORIATE TO VISIT SOME HONOUR TO OUR NURSES IN HISTORY AND TO BE PROUD TO BE A NURSE. I AM PROUD OF BEING A NURSE, AND I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THAT. :)

A uniform doesn't make a "real nurse". You're no more a "real nurse" than I am just because I wear scrubs.

LOL! Just kidding sweetie. Nice to see you! Looking and feeling fabulous I'm sure! :)

This cap we're wearing for grduation, looks like i ought to be asking "ya want fries with that?"

Not to mention it looks like it could double as a french fry basket.

Hello,

Its wonderful to read that so many nurses around the world want to wear a white uniform and a cap!

Call me OLDFASHIONED, BUT specially in geriatric nursing the pt love to see A REAL NURSE! I often use cap and a special uniform at x-mas time or spesciel occations. And Its enormesly positive respons!

My favorite hobby is nursing history: and to look back and see what kiind of uniform did fekx. Florence Nightingale weare? She had spescial opinions; they must not be to "sexy" (she didnt use that word, but..), they had to be functional, and the crinoline in the Victorian time was taken out of FN uniform, just for better comfort at work.

Yes, that at good point: comfortable: its a working habit, but we have as nurses a history and tradition witch is very importing to care about!

I often get som odd faces when I tell people that I am a nursing uniform collector! They think its something sexual, fetisj or something wrong. But I want to take care about our history! Right now its English uniforms that are in focus, and they are conservative, exsactly as Florence and the military under the Krimien war. I dont use them, but every habit has a story!

Last time I were in London, I bought many different caps, and in my appartement I am decorating with these feks. over some nursing books from anticqs store. l LOVE IT!

KEEP USING YOUR WHITE UNIFORM AND CAPS (AND BATCH) AND BE PROUD OF YOUR PROFESSION!

DO YOU TNINK I AM A LITTLE BIT STRANGE OR ODD OR CRAZY?

I want to give you information about caps: they are washed, ironed and stiffed as any other part of the uniform, therefor you use one a. new on every shift. when You use one EVERY DAY I agree that you can loose your hear. I am talking about spescial occations as x-mas and so on.

I'm surprised at the popularity of caps on this site!

I'm in my first year of school, but my prof and my text both mentioned that caps are out of fashion because they can harbor bacteria and are a possible souce of contamination (esp during sterile procedures). Has anyone else heard that?

There has never been a peer reviewed study done on infection rates caused by nursing caps. This "hypothesis" has never been tested. I wore my cap for 54 years and amazinging enough, my patients were not all dying from the infections that came from the bacteria on my cap. Anytime I had to wear a surgical cap during procedures, I would remove my nursing cap because the surgical cap does a better job of keeping hair out of the sterile field than the nursing cap did. When I was in nursing school (early 1950s) we learned that the nursing cap came into being as a kind of infection control to keep the nurses hair out of the way of treating her patients. It certainly would be better than nothing, especially when a nurse in the old days would not have been able to wash her hair daily, especially caring for the wounded during wars.

Did the textbook or your instructor sight any peer reviewed studies? Of course not, because there are none and there is no empirical evidence for such a statement.

Best to you

I'm not sure if you'll get an answer, because this thread originated in 2004. Just didn't want you to think people were ignoring your question! :)

I was not asking a question, I was simply stating that are no peer reviewed studies on infection control and nursing caps.

Best to you,
