I wore my white uniform and nurse's cap to work today. The compliments continued throughout my shift, but the MOST important compliment came from a young lad in elementary school. His mother approached me in the hallway, and said "I just wanted to let you know that my son was tickled pink to see you in your uniform. He got all excited, and said 'Mommy, Look! A real nurse! She's got the real nurse uniform on, and the real nurse hat, too!' :blushkiss
Wasn't that too precious! :) I told the mother thanks, and to let her son know we are looking forward to welcoming him into the nursing field one day.
Folks, if it weren't for the ironing required, I'd wear white and my cap every time I work. People truly DO care about what the "real nurse" wears.
Check out your responses tomorrow. It's after eleven at night, and I'm pooped for real. Nighty night ya'll!

Different strokes for different folks girl. There is nothing strange about a persons own interests. Nursing history is an awesome read. SherRN

The "real nurse" comment was from a little kid not one of us. We are all stereotyped in one way or another. We all have watched ER and seen scrubs and every kind of Nurse weakness there is. We see adds and there are whites and caps. There is no happy medium. We just all " Start where we are and do what we can" in what ever we wear.
Its always nice to see you posting here, cheerfuldoer! Glad also to see that you're looking into jobs with less stress.
When I graduated 4 years ago at the ripe old age of 47, I wanted a cap because nurses wore caps when I was a girl. My nursing instructor personally glued a red velvet stripe to a cap I brought in, and I wore it to graduation ( although I wasn't allowed to wear it to the pinning).
I only wore my cap twice to work. I loved wearing it, but I felt self conscious, because every nurse I met had to tell me how much she'd hated her own cap.
I can't see why we shouldn't wear a cap as an option, much the same as fun earrings or holiday scrubs!
Originally posted by florryIts wonderful to read that so many nurses around the world want to wear a white uniform and a cap!

KEEP USING YOUR WHITE UNIFORM AND CAPS (AND BATCH) AND BE PROUD OF YOUR PROFESSION!
DO YOU TNINK I AM A LITTLE BIT STRANGE OR ODD OR CRAZY?
all best from FLORRY:nurse:
((((((FLORRY)))))) NO, I do NOT think you are "a little bit strange or odd or crazy". Thank you for sharing your perspective on what the white cap and uniform mean to you. There is nothing at all wrong or silly about being passionate about something in one's life. At least you have passion for something. There are people who do not know what it means to be passionate about something in their life, so continue being who you are and enjoying what you are passionate about, Florry. :kiss :balloons:
SherRN..........thanks for the thumbs up! :kiss
NancyRN..........thanks a bunch! Good going for you for following through with your desire to wear your cap. It should always remain a choice. :)
I too had some staff make fun of me for wearing the nurse's cap and white uniform, but that's their immaturity showing through. I don't like seeing nurses wear "wrinkled slept-in looking scrubs" to work with dirty tennis shoes either, but I never make fun of them, or bring it to their attention. If I want to wear a white neatly pressed uniform with my white cap then that is what I will do......they can snicker or joke about it all they want. Peer pressure never bothered me as a kid, and it has never bothered me as an adult. So, they can just get over it, or act immature all they want.
Have decided to buy a cap and a white dress uniform for my next job, and wear it, at least on the first day and several more days. Used to wear my cap and whites everyday for years. LOVED IT! I worked hard for my caps and I really loved going to work looking like a nurse. My mother wore her cap everyday for over 20 years. She had a little trick, she put a cotton ball with her favorite scent under her cap where the bobbypins held her cap. SHe always smelled so good and the patients loved seeing her come into the room. SHE was a great nurse. SHe is gone now but I know 3 or 4 people who always say they miss her and how much she helped them. I think I have the answer to one of my most pressing problems, I just need to get back into a nursing job and be the nurse!
Where are you purchasing your caps? I will be graduating with my BSN in May and want a cap for my graduation photos, but have yet to find a source for one. If I wanted a cheesy nursing fetish cap with sequined trim I would be all set, but the real thing is proving elusive. Once I do find one, I'll trim it with maroon ribbon, since that is one of my university colours. :)
