  1. Any problems with urination? Sometimes kidney failure will cause people to be malodorous because its a way for the body to try and rid itself of toxins. He also may have a pharygeal pouch or something that is filling with food that could cause the odor. Just ideas--I would agree that he should keep his appointment. Let us know how he makes out...
  2. I actually found that by purchasing a palm pilot (I got a Tungsten E for about $200) it saved me a lot of money since I didn't need to purchase new drug books every year. I use Epocrates, which is free for PDAs with the Palm OS and find it thorough enough that I rarely have to use any other resource. I like having it always available in my pocket as well, and not having to search for my drug book. For supplement, our Pyxis also has a drug book built into it, and if I ned to, I can look up specific drugs in the IV drug book we have in our med room. Aside from specifics of IV administration, Epocrates has met my drug book needs very well.
  3. I actually hand carried my state board registration paperwork around to obtain the required signatures and then hand delivered it to the board. I walked out with my permit that day and then registered for the NCLEX via the internet two weeks later after I had recieved my first paycheque from the hospital I had started work at. I set my test date and then printed out the email copy of my ATT so I didn't have to wait a week for that to arrive. It was a lot of schlepping around, but it really expedited the process.
  4. I brought stethoscope (wipe down with alcohol prep after each pt to reduce the rusk of pathogen transmission), 4 colour pen, trauma shears, hemostat, penlight. Once at work I filled up with the day's prep pads, a tourniquet for IV starts, roll of tape (put it on the hemostats and then clip them to the bottom of your scrub top) and some gloves to be ready to go. I tend to write notes as I go on my forearm and then wipe them off after the information has been transferred so I don't carry a memo pad. This system came about because I used to write vitals, etc on my gloves, and then forget and toss out the gloves, having to retrieve the info from the rubbish. Two retrievals were more than enough for me to change to my arm, plus I can't misplace my arm. *grin* You may want a clipboard for your notes. Good luck!
  5. what a fantastic idea! the only thing i would want is to be sure i have a laptop and isp with a lot of access numbers to accomodate the moving about. one hotel i know of has a patron who books a room (always the same one) for 6 weeks a year...he's done it for years and the hotel is more than happy to accomodate him.
  6. Yes, the US does permit dual citizenship but I would prefer Canadian citizenship. You have to renounce one citizenship somewhere when it comes time to retire anyhow, as they obviously do not want people claiming retirement benefits in both countries.
  7. I got my temporary license yesterday, just in time to start work next Monday. I'm so relieved that it came in time. I spent a lot of time on the road driving around to ensure I had the proper signatures and paperwork to obtain it, but it was a long few weeks waiting for transcripts to make the rounds. Now I just have to pass the NCLEX and after that take the CNATs. :) I've been studying so I feel fairly well prepared for them. I just wish I hadn't missed the mose recent administration of the CNAT because there will now be quite a gap between the two sets of boards.
  8. Hello, I am a BSN RN and am a US citizen working in Vermont. I want to immigrate to NS and eventually go for Canadian citizenship, after which I'll give up the US citizenship. My question is directed at other US citizens who have immigrated to Canada--what was the time frame between filing your immigration application and getting landing papers? How does an application as Provincial Nominee affect the overall time frame? I have a two year commitment to work here in Vermont before I will be free to move to NS and would like to time my application so that my landing papers will be approved (crossing my fingers) at about the same time as that commitment is fulfilled. Thank you all for any information. :)
  9. Most of my classmates landed jobs quite easily which was encouraging. I start in two weeks...lets hope my temporary nursing license arrives in time! I'll take my boards after I get one or two paycheques so I can afford the fee.
  10. *lol* Everytime I am in Canada I buy a boatload of Smarties, custard powder, all dressed chips, roast beef chips. and timbits, among other things...I get teased about my choice of groceries, but its got to tide my entire family over for a month or two.
  11. Hooray...I landed my first nursing job and it was as easy as falling off a log. After sending out resumes and applications with little in the way of results I dolled up in business attire (complete with shoes designed by the Marquis de Sade), printed out a fresh copy of my resume and drove 90 minutes to a hospital I was interested in. I walked into human resources, introduced myself and said I was a new grad presenting myself for their consideration. Voila, on the spot interviews with H&R and with the nurse manager of the med-surg floor. They were ready to hire me on the spot and formally offered me the job just a few days later. I'm soooo thrilled, and now I get the satisfaction of telling the other facilities (when they get around to calling me) "I'm sorry, but I've already accepted a position." :) )
  12. Good idea...they have a variety of styles, most from Kay's Caps and its a way of getting around the rather large minimum order at Kay's. I just ordered 20 caps for my graduating class and will be putting ribbon on them as soon as they arrive--probably Tuesday or Wednesday. I'm glad we got it together for our pinning ceremony, because I really did want a cap. I may even wear mine occasionally and not just have it for a memento. I will put it on for a graduation photo in any event.
  13. Yep, you nailed it. :) NP is Nurse Practitioner. I have to decide if I want a certificate or to go for my Master's degree.
  14. No problem. :) I just private messaged you, btw. I thought I would send my contact info in case you wanted to chat further.
  15. I'm graduating from a BSN program in Vermont in May of this year and have a two year work commitment in the States before I can immigrate. I've spoken with the Nurse's Union in Nova Scotia and learned that I can sit for the Canadian boards as soon as I pass the boards down here. Then, because there is a nursing shortage, I can apply for preferential immigration status as a Provincial Nominee. This program is specific to each province, so you would have to contact the appropriate nursing authorities to get the details as they pertain to you.
