Is it true?

All I hear about Nurses seems to be... Nurses are scarred themselves, they all have emotional problems which is why they decide to care for the sick. I heard this from media both print and talk,family,friends...etc

For instance, on the radio show Loveline with Dr. Drew somethingorother.. He stated something along the lines of all nurses are emotional wrecks and that is why they went into to nursing, to help care for the sick but also to somehow fix their own problems.

Also, in my experience, 98% of the nurses ive come in contact with have been wonderful, kind, caring people. But I also sense they all have some underlying emotional factors going on. It's almost a different sense I get around them as opposed to the rest of healthcare workers I am exposed to.

I wish I could remember the exacts of all of what ive heard. Hopefully everyone gets gist of what im trying to say here.

was gonna post an answer but my therapist feels best not to get involved as he feels i'm working through all the emotional scarring and this would set me back years:roll

Oh, so THAT'S why I'm a nurse.........silly me, I thought I was doing this because I'm a caring person, when all along it was because I'm fat, depressed, and neurotic!! How glad I am to know this now, while there's still time to grab one of those great jobs at Wal-Mart so I can get mentally healthy!

Well, I hope everyone got a good laugh out of this. Certaintly apprears that way.

Orignally when Dr.Drew made the comments on his show, I was going to post them but I didn't and have forgotten them since.

Anyway... The post was made kinda tounge in cheek and did not work without having the quotes from the Doctor himself.

There are those in EVERY profession who are "messed up" best bet is to go talk to a social worker/psychologist they will tell you that a proportion (small) of the people who enter their profession actually have "issues" themselves.

Anyway what is the definition of "emotional issues"eek7.gif

And which emotions are we issuing??

Fright/timidity?BLUEGUY.GIFOh! yeah! we all run away soooo fast from things like vomit, incontinence open suppurating wounds

When I was in early recovery and doing some work around adult child of alcoholic issues I was told that MANY ACOA's are in the helping professions. No stats or percentages, just "many".

That was years ago when that particular movement was popular, and probably it would be more accurate to say that most people are ACOA's, and some end up in the helping profession.

Have you seen any "normal" people, ever?

Didn't think so

I've never heard that. Give me a break. What will they think of next?

I've seen a few nurses with mental health issues and if it is bad enough they usually leave nsg. b/c they can't handle the sress levels. But, imo most people with emotional problems do not enter nursing to begin with.

The only emotional issues that are part of nursing is dealing with death, dying, illnesses, suffering, etc. Anyone who is subjected to the amount of stress involved in dealing with those issues is going to have some emotions about it all. But, that is after they are nurses, not before. Anyone who has the capacity to care and comfort the ill is going to FEEL the pain that the patient is going through. This is all normal responses and why someone would misconstrue it as abnormal is beyond me.

Therefore, it takes a very stong, emotionally stable person to be a nurse. There are many people who do not have what it takes to do this job, they would "crack" under the pressure. It is those people who would "crack under pressure" that would say such a thing about nurses. They don't even have the capacity to understand it all.

I do believe that certain people who have unresolved issues turn to "helping professions" to help them feel better... y'a know helping someone else takes there mind off their own hurt. The only flaw in the thinking that ALL nurses are in this category is that ALL of anything is hardly ever true. Also, I can't think of a single person who doesn't have an unresolved issue or two!!!
