Please help with graduation speech
hello all... i am in desperate need of some help. i have been asked to speak at my classes graduation in july and try as i might i can't decide what to say. part of the difficulty lies in the fact that our graduation is for graduates of both the full time day and part-time evening weekend program so some of the 'inside jokes' i'd like to use i can't. i want my speech to be funny and inspirational/motivational. i want the graduates to walk away thinking the 10 minutes i spoke was worth their time. what did people say at your graduation that stuck with you, made you laugh, or just brought a smile to your face?? any feedback is greatly appreciated. thanks! lecia

Any Reading Hospital Nurses/Students?
Amber, Thanks for getting back to me. Yeah, I've seen the uniform since my sis-in-law went there a few years back... I was hoping they had changed since then!! I'll be living at home since I'm married... I'm an old fart of 26!! Ha, ha. I don't plan to take a tour of the school since I'm fairly familiar with the hosp itself. I'm concerned with your statement about the program being shaky because of the size of the classes. Do you feel you're getting a quality education and the individual attention you need?? I know you're busy and I really appreciate you sharing with me! Thanks again! Lecia

Some Feel Good stories
Markus, I don't have a story to share as I'm not even in nursing school quite yet... Fall of 2004. I just wanted to thank you for starting this thread (and thanks to those posting their stories). It's good for future nurses to know what the real world is about (the not so good stuff), but the good and sappy stuff is the kind of thing that will keep me motivated through the rough parts of school and beyond. Thanks again!!

A good report on MY hospital stay:)!
I'm sure it was hard for you to have to call and say "hey perfect job people, I won't be in b/c I've got some not so good stuff going on, but I promise as soon as I'm better I'll be in." I'm also sure that they thought... "no problem, you're worth the wait!" So glad you're better!! Have you been to the new job yet?? How goes it??

Not just the trolls....
Totally agree. After being sucked in by a troll once I now try to not post at all unless I'm sure I'll keep my cool and contribute in a constructive way...otherwise I'm just part of the problem, no better than the troll. JMHO

What field of nursing would you NEVER consider working?
I'm sure this may change once I start clinicals, but as of now.... I can't do LTC or any geriatric stuff because I have a strange "fear of the elderly." I think it ties in closely to my unresloved issues with my grandmothers untimely death. I realize I'll need to treat the elderly in any area of nursing, with a few exceptions, but if I didn't have a few "young" patients I couldn't handle it. **I am getting a bit better since working as a med recept. in a psych clinic because a good bit of our pts are elderly.** Other than the LTC setting I'm open to anything. I'll try anything once!!!

"You Made Me Want to be a Nurse."
I'm very fortunate to be 26 and have never been hospitalized for anything, except pneumonia when I was 2 (don't remember that, obviously)... However, one of the reasons I want to be a nurse is so I will be able to make peoples lives better. I only hope I can be as inspiring to my future patients as you were to this young lady. Congrats and keep up the good work!

LTC Burnout????
If it's always this time of year it's possible that it has more to do with the change in the weather.... not as much sunlight.... rather than being in the wrong profession. I have depression and my dh is bi-polar type II and we both get worse this time of year. Some people with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) ONLY get depressed when we roll the clocks back. I suggesting talking about this with your therapist and pdoc before you make any solid decision. Take care.

My apoligy ..
My BIGGEST flaw is that I usually open my mouth before I put my brain in gear. Speaking from your heart combined with being blunt (such as I am) can be a lethal combination, esp. in a forum like this where everything is written and ppl can't see your "non-verbals" or even hear the tone in which you're speaking. Hence, the edit button being a good friend to me. I commend you on having the guts to appologize and put yourself out there... Looking forward to more of your open and honest, yet less "critical" (for lack of a better word) posts!!
