Is it true?

All I hear about Nurses seems to be... Nurses are scarred themselves, they all have emotional problems which is why they decide to care for the sick. I heard this from media both print and talk,family,friends...etc

For instance, on the radio show Loveline with Dr. Drew somethingorother.. He stated something along the lines of all nurses are emotional wrecks and that is why they went into to nursing, to help care for the sick but also to somehow fix their own problems.

Also, in my experience, 98% of the nurses ive come in contact with have been wonderful, kind, caring people. But I also sense they all have some underlying emotional factors going on. It's almost a different sense I get around them as opposed to the rest of healthcare workers I am exposed to.

I wish I could remember the exacts of all of what ive heard. Hopefully everyone gets gist of what im trying to say here.

It is not true.

We are only human. The reasons we care for the sick are varied, but being emotionally ill is not one of them.

That's the funniest thing I've heard in awhile!

Wow. So now one has to be emotionally scarred to CARE and to further the wellbeing of another human being?

Well... so be it then ! Sheeesh.

So, now we are emotionally scarred doctors handmaidens!!!!! Well, heck it beats working at mcdonalds!!!! :) (trying to be funny, no insult to folks that work there)

Does it make any kind of sense to say ALL nurses are scarred? And is the media always right?

Ahh, yes, a doctor. They are never wrong.

How intuitive. It wouldn't be because of what the media, family and friends have told you?

These kind of statements are ridiculous. It is like saying all ethnic groups are one way, all those with alternative sexual orientation are one way. My favorite is all nurses that work LTC are second rate because they aren't good enough to work in a hospital. What about those that got into nursing with the thought of wanting to work LTC? On the other hand, maybe I'm in denial.

Oh, and how could I forget that all male nurses are gay! Hmm, maybe I'm in denial about that too.

Something must be seriously wrong with me, too, cause I want to work in LTC. Must be those deep underlying "issues" of loving old people.

Probably a grandparent issue. Suggest you find a therapist to help you explore this most unnatural need. :chuckle

We all have issues. There are no "normal" people. Some people are just great actors and hide their freaky side rather well... Who cares, really?

I've had anxiety/panic disorder for 25 years (since I was a very young child). It helps me to understand my patients. It also keeps me grounded and makes me realize that noone is perfect.

Wow! I must be mentally ill! I better go see my shrink! No, I dont think all nurses have emotional problems! I do however believe that nursing takes a serious emotional toll on your life! You either learn to deal with these things or you dont stay in nursing long. As far as the feelings you get around nurses I have no Idea what your feeling! I'm happy to see my co-workers when I go in! Im proud to call them co-workers and even prouder of the differences they make in peoples lives on a daily basis! Its easy for those who arent nurses to criticise them, If they put on the uniform and tried the job im sure there opinions would change!

I don't bother to hide my freaky side. :D Everyone at work knows I'm a nutcase.

I think we should look into where the heck Dr. Drew got his license. Or what kind of Doctorate he actually holds. Sounds like something he read in a Crackerjack box. Obviously these people don't know nurses.

Acceptance is the first step toward recovery. :chuckle
