Nurses General Nursing

We have an RN on the floor that i work with, we went to nursing school together, graduated last year and both got hired on the same floor. She is super sweet, but not exactly the brightest bulb in the tanning bed.

And i don't know why anyone has not said anything about this to her, but she is ALWAYS wearing sunglasses on the top of her head INDOOR at work.

like a real pair of designer sunglasses, on top of her head. and she is always adjusting them...so clearly she does not just forget they are there. But why on earth would someone wear sunglasses on the top of their head at work? (i work on a med/surg unit).

I addressed it once with a CNA i've been best friends with since childhood, just casually brought up in conversation OUTSIDE of work. She didnt think it was that weird and stated "she is just showing her personality"

I don't get why anyone else just does not think it is weird or no one has said anything. I dont think its some eye disorder where she needs sunglasses at certain points because ive never actually seen them on her face, EVER. and i've known her all through college.

Sorry it just bugs me!

Foolish. Looking.

And then eventually, as it always does, we'll have a thread wondering why, as a group, we are not always viewed and treated with the respect accorded to other autonomous professional groups.

Thats basically what I said with regards to the "I am Smart and Sexy".

I think my one post said "I have no teeth, a beer belly and my tan is disproportionate, so am I a genius or dumb?"

My best guess is she is showing off her sunglasses, or as someone else said, maybe she likes how her hair looks with them on it. Maybe she is afraid someone will steal them if off her person and not locked up. Either way, I do not believe it looks professional and is a sanitation issue. If you feel comfortable bring it up to her, privately, or drop you nursing manager an anonymous note. Gossip sucks and is also unprofessional.

My only possible explanation for this is that she has eyes that are sensitive to the computer screen lighting so when she is charting for long periods of time maybe she actually wears them?? Haha that is my very best guess.

...or drop you nursing manager an anonymous note.

Because if you signed it you'd look dumber and even more unprofessional than if you wore sunglasses on your head. for heaven's sake, if it's worth your manager's time, respect her enough to sign the note.

You are making so many assumptions, your credibility has been lost. You really have no idea, why these glasses are on her head. You talk about price, you talk about never seeing her wear them, you talk about her adjusting them, you doubt, they are needed. Why do you care so much? Why are you so focused on this nurses glasses? You have supervisors, unit managers, charge nurses who will speak to this nurse (and may already have and found an acceptable reason) if they thought it was unprofessional for her to wear. This is not your concern, and to bring in another party, is unprofessional, especially a CNA. Unless you see her commit abuse, leave her alone and focus on your own conduct.

I sound harsh, but part of what is making nursing unbearable, is the policing of all " well meaning" staff. The job is tough enough without having to watch your back, wondering who you work with "today" is going to question everything you do, say, or wear. We need to get back to minding ones own business and doing what we know we should do. Unbelievable, with all the many things that are happening and could happen, you are focused on this. Take my advice, try and be a better worker and co worker, you will find your shifts much easier to deal with. Peace!

First of all, I'd probably tease her about it too, because that's just silly. Or just straight up ask her why she always wears sunglasses on her head.

Secondly, what exactly is the I/D issue other than the possibility of them falling in to poo and nasty? How is it different from a headband or wearing regular seeing glasses on the face? I'm genuinely curious.

I think it's odd and unsanitary. She stated thru are always on her head (not over her eyes), so it sounds like she does not need them while working. While it really isn't the OP's "business", I think she's just making conversation here and looking for opinions. My guess is she's not losing sleep over it. I can think of a million quirky things about my colleagues that I can open up a light discussion about, as I'm sure you all can too. That's what this forum is all about.

Is it me or is the crowd here getting tougher?

Maybe she's covering a bald spot or hair extensions and she doesn't like headbands. She's from CA and you're from a more rural area. Maybe its the norm where she is from and it's just a part of what she thinks makes her her. It's just like gum chewing, tattoos, piercings, hairstyles, etc... some of us will agree with it while others will think it's repulsive. (I mean eye glasses can fall into C-Diff, headbands slip off too. I've had people say don't put on your lip balm while at work - even after washing my hands) We are all individuals, so accept she's different from you, and oddly enough she may think Wisconsin people are weird. Just a thought.

Your weird is someone else's norm. :o

My ex-husband used to wear his sunglasses inside all the time. Drove me effing nuts. I always thought it really rude, as when you're talking to a person, they generally like to see your eyes. I remember him wearing them once when we were interviewing caterers. Ugh.

Needless to say, I'm no longer married to him. One of MANY things about him that drove me crazy. Anyway, this thread reminded me of that.

Perhaps she is trying to keep her hair out of her face in a stylish way? Haha. It isn't a big deal, let it go. I'm sure you do things that people find irritating and think "is that professional"? Would you want them posting it on here for the world to see?

Maybe she thinks it's a cool fashion trend, or somehow distracts from her nose, eyes, cheeks, skin, etc (whatever part she's insecure with)......Or are they expensive sunglasses and she wants to impress with how much she spent?? Or she likes how the sunglasses frame her face, or holds her hair just the right way????

HHAHA, even if all this IS true, it is TOO freakin' WEIRD to worry about that at work when you're on a med/surg unit cleaning poop and wounds all day!!!

All these people that are saying you are being petty, psh, poo on them. I get it. I wonder things like that about people all the time, but sometimes, you just need to affirm you are crazy for thinking its crazy on a site like this! :)

Why is it we can bash our NM and say how unfair and unprofessional they are, everybody gives kudos. But we wonder why a coworker/friend wears these STUPID sunglasses on her head like she is in a photo op as a nurse, but she is an ACTUAL nurse, everybody thinks this is the "reason why being a nurse is so miserable."

Whatever. I find it hysterical. :)
