So, I came across this website: http://www.aboutmyjob.com/complete-list-of-stories/complete-list-of-stories/ and to my surprise, could not believe how many nurses hate their job. Go ahead, read some the stories on that site and tell me what you think about it.

In my personal opinion nursing is not that bad :). However, what I read sounds pretty accurate.

It CAN be... the majority of healthcare facilities are really cutting budgets and it really hits nurses hard. Understaffed and working with other burnt out employees, and when healthcare is really geared now towards customer service (not just making sure patients are happy, but catering to unrealistic expectations instead of what is best for that patient)... all of this can really be a killer.

It is what you make of it. I personally have found a specialty that I like.

I retired over a year ago after working full time as an RN for 28 years, was an LPN for 3 years prior to becoming an RN & was an aide prior to working as an LPN so I've been around awhile! I loved the nursing part of being an RN but hated the politics, the gossipy nurses & the whole nurses eating their young thing!
thanks,

There are days I come home thinking what in the hell was I thinking.
Of course I am also redoing my house right now and it makes me so glad I went to school and am NOT doing that for a living.
Work sucks sometimes. Hopefully it has those days where it gets better and reminds you why you are doing what you do.

Nursing evolved into something much more different than we expected it to.

Overall I love it and think we are fortunate to make the money we do in times when some people aren't even able to pay their bills.

A-Yup. It's that bad.
Funny....I had no idea when I was in school. I had never heard about floor nursing being like this. I have a good work ethic, lots of corporate experience etc....and I figured I'd be fine. I just wasn't ready for the general level of chaos and insanity.
It's the only job I know of where I regularly (not occasionally) see co-workers hyperventilating on the way in....and quietly taking some time to cry on the way out of work. And I work in a supportive environment with a great manager etc., but there's just simply a lot of work to be done, a lot of doctors (And medical students) to deal with, lots of orders (that seem to change each time you blink) and lots of sick patients.
I'm very new, so take it with a grain of salt. Plenty of the experience nurses on my floor accomplish all this and more with quite some grace.

You go to school, and fill your brain with all this 'cool' knowledge. You're so smart! Then you find a job and help save the world. Yes, you are helping people during their worst times and that's all good. Sure, it's hard work, but it's good work, you think. Oh, it's a rush man. You see things that most people will never see. Good and bad. It's life changing for sure. In the mean time, little by little, you give a little bit of yourself to the 'Machine'. Day by day the 'Machine' sucks a little life out of you until eventually you can't give anymore. Meanwhile the Machine keeps asking for more. Oh, can't you just stay 4 more hours? Can't you come in on Saturday? Then you find yourself making the calls, begging, pleading.
It doesn't matter who you are, the Machine will chew you up and spit you out. The Machine always wins.
So, get your kicks, nothing wrong with that. However, have a backup plan in case you need to bail, or are forced to bail. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP PLAN.
