ipods at work

I have noticed many cna's and even nurses using ipods at work, even wearing them in patients rooms. half the time you can't even get their attention. does anyone else have a problem or concern with this?

That's disconcerting, when you need your nurse you won't be able to get their attention. Or being needed by another staff member. Isn't this along similar lines as cell phone usage, would one talk on the phone while giving patient care? That seems irresponsible and rude in my opinion.

Sigh...what is the matter with people? Just wait til a pt is injured/worse because the nurse or CNA was paying more attention to an iPod.

As if having your cell phone in your pocket wasn't bad enough.

I carry my MP3 to work, since the employee lot is almost a mile from the hospital. It helps pass the time on the walk, but when I'm on the clock its off period.

We had a couple of pharm techs who would wear theirs with the earpieces in while delivering the pt drug cassettes and piggybacks and floorstock, etc. I found it very disconcerting, unprofessional and an accident waiting to happen. I phoned their supervisor and relayed my concerns and it has stopped for now.

that does not sound safe or professional... i can't believe no one's stopped it yet. at least in patients' rooms!!

What about monitor tech's ?

I used to listen to my CD player back in the day on the NOC shift and I've never lost focus on my monitor screens. Heck, alot of them have portable DVD players.

But yea, bedside nurses shouldn't have iPods. That's just plain stupidity. How are you going to hear that call light or worse: A confused patient attempting to get out of bed on his/her own. :chair:

I have a problem with it. It's unprofessional. Listening to music is what you do at home, in the car, or working out.

How can they hear what's going on if they're listening to music? How can they hear call lights or when a pt yells out for help? How do the patients feel when they see a nurse or CNA walk into a room listening to music?

Definitely notify your NM. I'm sure she'll put a stop to it. Where I work, we're not even allowed to study at work - even at break.
