Interview for A School RN position

Published

Hi, There!

I was invited for a much coveted School RN interview. I have ADN, Bachelors in another field rather than nursing, and 2.5 yrs experience in Labor and Delivery in hospital setting. Plus I have been subbing as a School RN in a district different from the one that I was invited for an interview for 2 years too.

I really need this job, I still work at my L&D unit, but I desperately need to switch.

What can I expect at the interview? Aside from the typical, tell us about yourself, and what's your weakest point, how else can I prepare myself?

I am not sure a far as the format of the interview, I just know it will be around 30 min and there will be a couple of interviewers

Thank you- thank you! I appreciate all feedback!

Hearing and vision screening.

knowing how to use them?

We can't really prepare you for this interview or this position. You are not even sure if this is an elementary school. Do you know how to administer epipens and inhalers? Can you manage allergies and juvenile diabetes?

Do know when to involve CPS?

I think you are asking us to help you fake it.Do you really want to fake it.. if you are the only healthcare professional around for 200 kids?

I don't think the OP is doing anything wrong by asking what to expect in an interview. When I interviewed, it was for the school district and the interviewers didn't even know what school I would be at (elementary, middle, HS). Anyone who wants ANY job would be smart to get an idea of typical questions for the field they're trying to get into.

you are all wonderful!!! Thank you for great tips and feedback! I ll let you know how it goes!!!

I was interviewed by the 2 principals and then a superintendent. There weren't many medical questions - it was more focused on supporting an academic environment.

How does this differ from hospital nursing? I need to think like an educator. My priority is to get kids safely back into the classroom.

Why the interest in school nursing? Like OB nursing, I enjoy working with the well population and helping them to maintain wellness and health. Pregnant women aren't sick. Even kids with chronic illness like diabetes and seizure disorders can life a healthy life. I am in the school to ensure their health and safety.

I wasn't expected to have school policies memorized but that's a good question to ask - I will strive to adhere to the policies set forth by the school district. If I am not sure, I will ask.

You also might want to think about health topics you are passionate about and how you will influence the school. A great topic for elementary schools is germ control. Talk about how you will work with staff to develop lessons related to containing germs and promoting a health environment - handwashing, sneeze in your sleeve, etc.

Dudette. No. What in her post led you to this?

I just thought of something to add. A big part of School Nursing is interacting with parents. You have 2 1/2 years in L & D. Use that as example of your experience interacting with parents, during periods when emotions are highest; yea, use that.

In my first interview with AP and office worker I was asked about how I felt about helping change "accidents" (i.e. frequent poop/pee kiddoos), if I was willing to call parents and harass (opps, I mean make sure the ADHD kids got their meds this morning) and if I was okay with "other duties as assigned"...

They weren't kidding as I deal with all (and many, many others) on a daily basis. ;)

I do love my job though.

You have subbed as a school nurse, tat. You have got this! Good luck :)

Sounds like she's being pretty well prepared, to me.

I have a decent sized Amish population. One of my questions related to an Amish child vomiting & icant get a hold of parents...what do I do?

Another was about a kid having an asthma attack, no inhaler at school, but another child with same medication does have their inhaler at school...what do I do?

Good luck!

Hello,

I had an interview. Basically, I was interviewed for about 1 hr vs 30 min as I was told before. There were a nurse sup , and a couple of other school nurses at the interview

They asked me about diabetes, CPS, what do you do if you suspect a 9th grader is pregnant, HR type questions.

Thank you again and we ll see how it goes.
