Hi there folks,

i just wondered if any of you have had any experiance of the above named company for obtaining your car on arrival to the USA?

i recieved some information about them from OGP in a relocation pack

in the pack it states that they can obtain USA finance for you on a brand new car/truck, which seems competitively priced, this will go a long way to starting a USA credit history.

They deliver the car on arrival the tag and insurance are taken care of by them, it seems to make the buying process less hassle (one less thing to think about)

any opinions?????

am off to town now to get my international driving licence- hurrah!!

Kay, would you say that a big car would be better then? is this due to your accident or for practical reasons? we are thinking about getting a truck as mark will need one for work, him being a builder.

the theory was if we got one with a crew cab we could all use it until i managed to get a car of sorts, i thought about a 4x4 or dodge caravan for family use, thought about getting the first one through IAS and using that vehicle to drive to get the second.

well thats the plan.... sort of...... i think..... lol

We've just sold our Chrysler Voyager (Town and Country equivalent) and would seriously consider another one just for size (practicality in getting all the little Glyndwr's in) and comfort - although there are probably better all round MPVs available. The T&C has only got a 3.3 engine so it shouldn't guzzle the gas too much.

Belinda-Wales has her eye on a nice SUV - Lexus, BMW X5 or similar. We can all dream can't we? ;) Of course, I keep on telling her that this may happen once she get's gainful employment and isn't sat around the pool all day or doing minor things like looking after our 3 children including our 9 month old whilst I'm enjoying myself in work. :lol2:

Cheers

Big car because in a little car you may feel intimidated as everybody drives large cars. We had a Dodge van it saved our lives. We now drive a Liberty Jeep we call it the little beast because it it v strong little car, it's not little but when your on the interstates it is smaller than most.

He will be able to pick up a truck under $10000. The titan is a great truck which is around $36000 new, the F250 is a good strong truck, one hit us so we know thats good:lol2: .

With such a good size family the town and country is great we had a hire one and we loved it. I would buy one again if we had the money. So much to choose from over here but you need to shop around-car sales men are like a pack of wolves when you drive it they are around your car touting for business. The deals are not great.

The minor work- well just for the record I would rather go to work than do the minor work, so I hope you get a thump for that comment:lol2:

Oh yes here kids have to have car seats up to a certain weight, I think is it stricter than the UK. I have my 4 year old in a big old comfy seat-cost $36 at walmart

Oh yes here in the desert you have to change your oil every 3 months no exceptions!!!!! It is not expensive around $15-Plus car tyres have to be checked too

well both of the cars mentioned are the ones we thought about purchasing dodge ram or ford f150/250 for mark, dodge caravan for me, this is what we have driven on holiday in the past and i liked it, so it looks like we are on the right track with that.

Belinda has got the right idea, i fancied the bmw x5 but cant really afford it intially to be honest, maybe in a few years mind you i will probably be too old to get into a car that high up by the time i can afford it lol

im not sure about IAS it seems to make it simple but i dont want to spend 10000 too much either

Hi madwife

did you arrange your hire car and insurance form the UK as if going on holiday until you obtained your AZ licence? Because obviously you need a car from the minute you arrive in the US. And can't get your US state licence until you get you SS.

Yes we sorted it out via the internet as though we were coming on holiday, and hired for up to a month to give us a chance to look. They will normally charge by the week. It may be better to get the hirecar away from the airport, Enterprise is the best value we found-plus they rent out GPS which was a great help for us.

I didnt work for a month after arriving-but most are expected to start work within 2 weeks

I want a convertable bug! :) Small but damn cute!!!;)

ok hers my 2 cents worth,,,,,got to talk the lingo !

we came without any advice about getting a car, only that the link that ogp have with the bank of america and they will help to give you a loan with no credit history. after we arrived...with i nternational driving licences in hand as instructed by ogp, we were told that we had 90 days as new us residents to sit our driving test, including on the road test. and it wouldnt have made a difference if we just had our uk driving licences. we brought cash with us and bought a $5,000 secondhand car. it did us for the 18 month contract and then we sold it. we have friends who went to california and had to get cali licences before they could buy a car. we then came to arizona and bought a suv....1999, and it cost $5,300 cash. high mileage but it does us. only problem was, we paid for the car had to pick it up, so we tried to insure it, but they wouldnt insure us until we could produce stateside driving licences. so all it took was a trip to the place and produce the licences that we had and they gave us arizona licences. as for buying a car before or after you get here, it all depends on how much money you have or how much debt you want to be in. the meet and greet person from ogp took us all over the place to help us buy a car initially. renting here is expensive.

This autosource link of OGPs must be a new thing then, i think what i will do is get a quote from them and find out what its going to cost and weigh up whether i want to be stuck with that amount of finance, personally i feel i want more disposable income when i move not less!

the problem really is that mark needs a decent truck that is reliable, and worry about buying a second hand one that will let him down as he will need to do more miles than me.
