In light of the recent NETY thread that was closed...

  1. Do you think NETY threads should be reported for TOS violations before they get ugly?

Can we have an unofficial policy where all inappropriate NETY threads are immediately reported to the moderators for breaking TOS? The recent NETY thread was closed as I was typing a response that included a request for people to not buy into the poster who was a new member on post #2 and was insulting people and therefore I decided must have been trolling. In that post I was also about to request that the moderators close the thread. Before I hit send, the thread was closed and very appropriately I will add.

Edit:

NETY stands for "Nurses Eat Their Young."

I don't think we necessarily should just shut down all NETY threads. Remember, there are new members coming everyday and yes, they can use the search function-----but fresh ideas and perspectives should be welcomed even on old subjects like this. As long as they stay on topic and within TOS, then it's all good to me.

Everybody deserves to be heard, but it helps if the snarky comebacks are kept at bay. Have noticed some people join with no thought in mind other than to make subtle and not so subtle digs at people who are just expressing their views. Post after post of the same behavior from the same member(s) makes it less pleasant for everyone else. Then, if moderation comes into play, many useful posts get removed along with the snark. I was recently reading a thread with a controversial subject being discussed and was learning a lot from the different points of view. The snark started and I told myself, "oh, no", this thread is not long for staying open or staying whole. Differing opinions and views can be expressed without being disagreeable. Some forget that.

But! This occurs on all manner of threads; some incite nastiness and snarkiness by their very nature. SO is the solution to just shut them all down without allowing people to attempt a mature, informative discussion? I just do not think so. We have mods for a reason. And there are many members who are only too happy to report violations of TOS. In other words, the system in place WORKS and for good reason. The moderators here do a great job of keeping things on track and keeping the site user-friendly. That does not need to include censorship in the form of automatically shutting down threads because they have the potential to get ugly.

I happen to think a good rule would be that brand new posters no be able to start threads for a while.

Ooooh ! I got it! We all know the mods can combine duplicate threads. Well, this is the mother of all duplicate threads. The older iterations get abandoned after awhile, but why leave them to rot in electron land? Revitalize them by combining the new iterations, folding them right in! No worries about whether they've lost their topical appeal-- they'll never change, we know that-- and those of us who have already said our piece won't have to repeat ourselves, and our deathless words will still be there for the newbies to read and they'll be, well, deathless.

How about that? Would that be helpful?

Also remember, you can ignore threads that irritate you. If NETY annoys you, then don't open the thread and read it. Problem for you, is solved. Let the moderators do their job when problems arise, if they even do.

I think combined threads are messy, esp ones that have many, many posts---- and individual opinions can get lost in the fray.

WHY all the opposition to this subject? Really if it irritates you, move on. Let those who want to discuss these things, do so, without the messiness and complication of combined threads of like 600 posts. Why is it so hard to ignore the things that irritate us? Opening and reading such threads is a deliberate choice one makes.

On sites where I work as staff, threads are closed long before they reach hundreds of posts. That is just exercising common sense.

ROFLMAO thank you for the laugh of the day for me!!!

Isn't the point of closing a thread is that the topic is now close for discussion because it got heated? Why do people feel the need to start another thread in which to discuss why the old thread got closed? Boggles the mind.

People need to either not read the threads that irritate then or just buck up buttercup and grow a thicker skin.

Now this makes sense.
