I'm currently in my 3rd semester of nursing school, and much of the behavior I've seen from nursing students and nurses alike has been quite alarming. With a few exceptions, the nurses at my clinical sites have been downright rude and condescending. Half the students are self-important jerks. Even some of the instructors have this superficial kindness about them until you rub them the wrong way and reveal their true personalities. It just seems like this field attracts jerks who just want to go out of their way to convince people they're kind and compassionate. It's scary to think about bullying culture and being surrounded by these types on a daily basis.

Hmmmmm interesting, so everyone else around you in class is a jerk huh?........ Hmmmmm........if the problem is everyone else and not me, what are the odds?, One must wonder whether the problem is them or in fact me or my perception......

Well, you know what they say... if you run into a jerk in the morning, you ran into a jerk; you run into jerks all day, you're the jerk.
I missed the part where I said everyone I encounter is a jerk. Thanks, though.

And your response to vanilla bean seems rude and condescending.

Vanilla bean didn't say you said everyone you encounter is a jerk. S/he quoted a saying about running into jerks "all day." You did say that half your classmates are "self-important jerks" and you are worried about being "surrounded" by various kinds of jerks "on a daily basis" in nursing, which does sound like you feel you are, in fact, "run(ning) into jerks all day" (and, in all seriousness, I agree with the basic concept that, if you encounter one jerk, you've probably encountered a jerk; if you keep encountering "jerks" on a regular basis, you need to start looking at yourself more closely).
If you have serious concerns about going into nursing, now is the time to make a decision about that, before investing further time and money. I've been in nursing >30 years and have run into only a handful of people I would consider actual "jerks" during that time, but the field is certainly not for everyone.
What are you expecting anyone here to say in response to you? Your initial post is to basically slam all the nurses here, and your second post is a dismissive and snarky response to someone who did bother to post a reply. Your experience is your experience. I doubt anything any of us can say will change your mind about the conclusions you're already formed, no matter how many hundred members post here to say all the nurses and nursing students they know are wonderful people.
Best wishes for your journey!
Nah, just a little jerky [emoji6]

I have to disagree with the whole "running into jerks all day" saying. That is a version of argumentum ad populum. I've been around long enough to know that you can run into a whole crap load of crappy people. You just have to do your best to limit your contact with them. Best of luck to you.
Probability goes against that assertion you just made, one is more likely to be exposed to a mix of personalities and not just one type, in this case jerks lol

I think the real problem is when people expect nurses to be made of soft, 24-carat gold. You seem to be genuinely surprised that nurses are human.

I say, quit. It's that simple. I work with incredible nurses and had an awesome one in clinical today. You can't hang? Get out now.
