I am taking my pre reqs now but read a post that mentioned because the poster received a D in the class he/she will have to apply to a different nursing school. Is that how it is at every school? You cant just retake the particular class at the current school?

At my school, if you don't pass a class (in nsg school) then you have to sit the next semester out and reapply again the next year. If you fail two classes then you are dismissed from the program. You have to find another school to apply at as my school will not consider admitting you again.
well, i guess that u NEED TO ASK THE SCHOOL U WANT TO ATTEND. in my school if u do not get a B or better then u are out no questions asked and no transfer to another school if u made a D or F. it depends on the school and how long they have had the program and of course above all HOW HARD THE SCHOOL IS. i go to a school that is very hard mainly b/c it is a new program. we started off with 66 students and have 5 left. very hard. the moto -- above the bar we are.
study hard and check out ur school. good luck everyone this sem.
Hi Cheryl,
It sounds like your responding to my post. At my school a 75 is a "C".....I received a 73 for my course grade. Some schools have a retention program...for example at my school the only way to get accepted a 2nd time for the RN program is to go through the LPN program first. I wish I could take that option I could...but going to class at night from 5:30-11:00 or 11:30 ish..is not an option for me. Make sure you check with your school on their grading and retention programs if any.
Hope everything works out,
Fatima

here in ct...i'm @ a pvt lpn school & if you don't have a b...by the end of each mod your out....they are really awful about it too...they come in after each final & weed you out in front of all the other students...very degrading....
At my school you have to finish each Semester with a "C" (77-84) is the lowest grade possible or you're out - this includes Nursing Courses and the co-req's. They do give you 2 more times to try and make it through - this is a 5 Semester Program and from what I've been told - no matter what Semester it is that you fail, you have to start all over again from scratch (meaning - reapply and hope to be chosen for the following year).
During Clinicals this week I met 2 RN's that graduated from my school in the last few years. One graduated 3 or 4 years ago and said that only "8" people graduated and the one that graduated last year said only "20" people graduated. They were both from classes with a little over 40 people, so those aren't great odds. First Semester we lost about 10 people (for various reasons) - they were replaced last month with about 10 LPN's that have transitioned into our Program, so now we are back to about 40 people. They are all currently working as LPN's in local hospitals and have much more experience and knowledge than most of us, so I'm just guessing that they at least will be graduating - no clue about the rest of us. I try not to think about the "odds" of actually graduating, but still, it's pretty depressing thinking that only about 1/2 the people in class will make it through and keep praying that I'm fortunate enough to be one of them. Sue :)

Cheryl,
it depends on the individual school as they all have their own rules/regs. At my 1st school u had to have a decent GPA for entrance, then once accepted, u had to maintain a "C" or better in all classes (lect/lab;seperate also). You could fail a max of 2 classes, and would be held back a semester or two (space permiting). Once u failed 2 classes u were out! you could appeal, but the board was very tough about who they decided to re-admit(happened 2 me!). Another school I attended: u had to have a "B" or higher in all sciences and math (only 2 retakes allowed on preq's, or u wait 3 yrs to re-apply)(once again, happened to me). Your GPA has to be a 3.0 or higher when entering, or u sign a contract stating u r aware of the requirements and u HAVE to seek couseling/tutoring until it comes up to the required 3.0 and u have to do this every semester its low), and u can't fail ANY math once in the program.
My school allows for as low as 77 in co-reqs and 80 in any nursing course, both are c's. If you don't make the grade, you're out. You can reapply but good luck. I talked to a student last week who told me she's been trying for 3 years to get into our program cause its the only one near by that is affordable.

Not all programs are alike. Mine will give a second chance. I know quite a few students who have been retained to repeat a semester. There is no third chance.
