I have seen a couple of posts about the motives of students/career changers/people going into nursing . I thought of the question and I want to know.
If RN pay became regulated and new grads had to start at $8.50 and the cap was $17...
1. would you still go into nursing ?
2. would you quit nursing?
why and why not.
1)the reason i havent returned was because i am not tied to my computer.
2) i used $8.50 because that was the first figure that came into my head and it is a little above minimum wage at least in ga.
3) someone asked why the question, like i said in the original post, i was just curious. i had read madwife's thread on why people are going into nursing and also katie5's thread which talked about if the motive behind nursing really matters.
i thought mother theresa had graced us on an.
5)i asked myself that question and at first i was ambivalent, but i know that i would not be a nurse for too long at that wage. we deal with way too much and deserve much better than that. thanks to all that replied.
Hmm . . . . im thinking op just tossed out $8.50 amount to imply as some lowly figure & that some of us are truly in this for the cash.
Perhaps they were trying to prove that, but it proves nothing IMHO. Needing to make enough to pay the bills does not imply that most of us are just in it for the cash. Unfortunatley none of us were born rich and actually have to work. If I won the lottery tomorrow and had enough to live on, I would still work as a nurse - although not full time. I might actually volunteer as a hospice nurse.
Although I do agree with you that there are some days when working in the drive thru window at Mickey D's would be a relief. And yes I did work there at one time. But we still go back everyday...must not be that cash. :redbeathe
I would quit as well. I love being a nurse, and I love taking care of patients. But, at the end of the day, I'm a human being who has bills to pay..Also, as it is, I don't think we get paid enough for the amount of responsibility we have, and the conditions that many of us work under(ie..no breaks, or time to pee).
Thankfully, I'm pretty smart and resilient. I's simply have to find another career.
Only if I'd been grubbing for roots and tubers for months, my green curtain-dress had fallen apart, and my next stop was Waterloo Bridge.
In other words, my loved ones were starving, I'd used up all available resources, and my only other job possibility was something illegal or morally repugnant.
IM not a nurse, but I would quit school now and go work at walmart instead if thats how much a nurse makes.
Ive been thinking about this lately and Im starting to think that a nurse doesnt make enough. Im only doing pre-req's but Im busting my ass to get straight A or Ill never get into the program. I wouldnt do this much studying for $10/hr.
