If Nurses were paid $8.50 per hr, would you or would you not

Published

I have seen a couple of posts about the motives of students/career changers/people going into nursing . I thought of the question and I want to know.

If RN pay became regulated and new grads had to start at $8.50 and the cap was $17...

1. would you still go into nursing ?

2. would you quit nursing?

why and why not.

I'm wondering when the people who flame others for asking questions about salary will come in and post on this thread. You know, the ones who state God came to them at birth and sent them a "calling" and saying it has nothing to do with money(so how dare anyone ask about salary) but just the genuine overwhelming great feeling of compassion.

 I am wondering why this poster even asked a question like this? Maybe nothing better to do?? Who in their right mind would honestly answer "yes"? At least when some posters put a rhetorical question out there for reactions, they will, at the very least, give their own answer to start. Has anyone noticed that there is no follow-up response by the OP. Ridiculous waste of time....jmho.

No, I wouldn't work for $8.50 as a nurse. I was making that as a high schooler working at Burger King. I believe in pay for services rendered especially for the wear and tear on my body, education required, and license requirements. If I have take all of the stress and agony that I sometimes face as a nurse now, I would have to consider a career change or become a gold digger. I love my career, yet my sanity and common sense comes first.

1. I hate rhetorical questions.

2. There's not much I'd do for $8.50 an hour, so saying I wouldn't practice nursing for that amount doesn't mean very much.

This.

Like everyone else has said, that amount of money would be far below what is required for living expenses. Having already spent the money for my degree and endured the stress of nursing school, I would just cut my losses and move on. If I have to live below the poverty line, I might as well spend my days fishing instead destroying my body one day at a time. After all, a bad day fishing is 10 times better than a good day at work.

If our insurance premium was covered in full and all medical charges and medicines were covered under our plan, in a heartbeat.

I would still be a nurse. Education and doing what I love is priceless.

Not for twice that amount.

If the cost of living was about 1/2 it is now I may consider working for $8.50/ hour. Otherwise, I'm sure there is something less stressful and less laborious I could do for the same amount of money. So the answer is no I would not work as a nurse for $8.50/hour.

If nursing paid 8-fiddy, hopitals would have to hire english translators.

No...of course not! I could have a much easier job for $8.50/hr and I am an LPN. Think of all the stress and responsibilities you have to endure as a nurse. It can be physically and mentally draining as well.

Nope. That's close to minimum wage in my state. If I can work at PetSmart and not have the stress of nursing and make the same, I'd do it.
