So, an earlier post from a person claiming to be a multimillionaire as a result of gambling got me thinking...
If you suddenly found yourself with a very large sum of money that you didn't work for (lottery, inheritance, found in a paper bag inside of a tree in the park) would you still work as a nurse? I'm talking about enough money to live off of for the rest of your days.
Personally, I would still work as a school nurse. I need health insurance and I really do enjoy my job. I may even enjoy it more if the paltry salary didn't stress me out so much at bill-paying time.
What I would STOP doing is looking for per diem work and babysitting on the side... later for that!
What about you guys?
I'm not a nurse, but I want to play too! If I won a ton of money I would:
1. Get my aunt and uncle back on their feet after some scary health issues my uncle has been having
2. Make sure my boyfriend has a car that runs, can get his wisdom teeth out which he desperately needs, and doesn't have to work 18 hour days to do it
3. Pay off my parents mortgage
4. Get my grandparents a house on the Connecticut shore
...and then I'd go to med school or be a paramedic since I debt/paying the bills isn't an issue in this lovely scenario.
People who come into large sums of money suddenly have a bad habit of ending up broke. The prevailing wisdom is that the stock market has about a 7% return on investment per year over long periods of time... so I'd turn it over to a firm like Vanguard and give myself a $70,000/year allowance (paid weekly, naturally) and supplement that with a part-time job. Just to keep the old neurons firing.
I'd hire a housekeeper. And I'd travel everywhere.
If I had life changing money I would absolutely quit my job and travel. Alone.
I'm hurt, Far. I thought we were going to fangirl all over Australia??
Enough money to retire on? You bet I'd quit my job. I'd probably finish school because I'm stubborn enough to want to say I did it, but I would certainly not kill myself working afterward. I'd probably work locum tenens or something. Maybe locum tenens in the UK, where my chances of meeting some of my favorite actors/actresses would increase exponentially. Just sayin'.....

We'll discuss it at lunch.
I would pay off my bills, save a lot of the money in retirement and investment accounts, do all the remodeling and house updates I've been putting off due to a lack of money! Plan on lots of travel that I've deferred due to bills. It would be nice to go on trips with my friends instead of staying home for a change! Indulge myself with spa beauty treatments and jewelry. lol Love to retire, but want my financial house in order first. With a pot of money I could plan on an early retirement!
