If I had a million (or more) dollars...

Nurses General Nursing

Published

So, an earlier post from a person claiming to be a multimillionaire as a result of gambling got me thinking...

If you suddenly found yourself with a very large sum of money that you didn't work for (lottery, inheritance, found in a paper bag inside of a tree in the park) would you still work as a nurse? I'm talking about enough money to live off of for the rest of your days.

Personally, I would still work as a school nurse. I need health insurance and I really do enjoy my job. I may even enjoy it more if the paltry salary didn't stress me out so much at bill-paying time.

What I would STOP doing is looking for per diem work and babysitting on the side... later for that!

What about you guys?

I don't have to work anymore, but I still work one day a week, sometimes twice a week. I want to keep an active license til the day I die.

I still come up with a lot of things to keep me busy during the week, but it is nice to work and feel PRODUCTIVE vs. just staying busy. I'm not knocking "busy," but nursing in small doses feels really really good.

I might stay PRN just to keep my license and skills somewhat up. Hmm...what would I do? You know, we want to think we'd be giving but wonder how we really would be with all that money? I'd give a lovely tithe to my church first. I would buy my dream car which would be an Infiniti Q80. Yeaaaa. And pay my house off. Buy my husband a dream truck. And put a huge chunk in savings for my son.

ScottE This is what I had in mind when I titled the post! I love this song, it reminds me of my old man.

I would work PRN. One shift every month. I would pay off debt. And travel.and give back

In going with the title of this thread...I would buy you a monkey! Haven't you always wanted a monkey?

Seriously, I would pay off my school loans, all my kids would be set for life (with restrictions about living right, etc.) and I would live on the beach. I would still work, I can't imagine life without work. I know, I'm weird.

One million doesn't go that far. It seems like a lot but you can burn through it fast.

That said, if i had 1m land in my bank account today, i'd buy myself a vette, get my wife that audi r8 she's been eyeing, put $100k into a slush/toy/travel fund and then invest the remaining $700k in the market.

It really does seem like peanuts nowawdays! That's why I said the "magic number" is different for everyone. Anyone who would be set for life with 1 mil is probably already pretty well off!

And to answer the question in your location... No, I certainly don't have a problem with Jersey. I miss my native state every day. Give the Garden State some love for me!!

My family income is far from the millions, but I have to option not to work if I don't want to and I still work. I work per diem and get the benefits that working as a nurse gives, but avoid the wear and tear of full-time hours.

Even if I did get the millions, I doubt I would give up my job.

After the thrill of winning the lottery wears off and giving away lots of money and helping your family out with your winnings, and dodging those who would scam you, without some kind of direction or purpose in life, life feels empty.

Working in a job, (even the most part-time) gives a person a purpose, a feeling of competence, a feeling of independence that comes from being able to support yourself. Working with the public keeps you from living in a bubble, cut of from reality.

I actually have an inheritance now that is already well invested...not enough that I could just quit work and be fine but enough that if it remains untouched my financial advisor said I could probably retire at 50. Which is a long ways away, but still pretty cool to think about :-)

Soooo, with another 1 million, which we'll assume is not going to be taxed to death, I'd probably set aside about a third to half to invest, and just use the rest to take some time off work and realllly figure out what I want to do. My job is not as terrible as it was (a different story that was recorded in a different thread)but I am not wholeheartedly loving the NP thing. So a little money would probably give me some financial room to do something way different.

Oh, and I'd loooove a grand piano too. I miss my music.

Ewwwwwwwww. Icky Acute.

You channeling NOADLS today?

Oh, I'm just kidding. Me and DW would split our time between a cabin in the woods, road trips and cruising. I might do something productive, but probably not.

I'd still work, because I'd go crazy not having a job, maybe 2 days/week. I'd take the rest and buy a nice little farm with it (10 acres or so) and build a bigger version of my current little homestead. I'd invest the rest for retirement.

Smart move!

I was given my inheritance at age of 14 and it was all gone by the age of 18. Lucky for me I had the inheritance money and was able to "buy my way out" of some legal problems at 17 but that's a whole other story.
