I confronted one manager upon her rudeness and creating hostile environment for me. She started picking on me and collecting brownie points to show to people above her that I did such & such mistakes. The kind of mistakes I did were common ones while charting whcih even 15 yr old nurses do. Otherwise my charting is very detailed and sequential from head to toe. I never had problem with any patient, doctor or my peers but I was differnet that I spoke up for being treated like a piece of garbage.
The other manager above her knows me and she supports me completely. She transferred me to another place so I get out of the former manager's hostile environment but I am thinking why I had to pay such a big price for speaking infront of the nasty manager. Is the feeling of power makes people so evil and wicked ? Where is Nightingale and her nursing ideals and virtues ? down the drain or lost in this money minded world.

You are trying to take what likely is an isolated incident and extrapolate it across an entire population. (In this case nurse managers.) You'll find in every society/organization that some people are dicks, some people are complete angels, and the rest of the people generally fall somewhere between the two extremes. Being a dick isn't something that is isolated to people in a position of power.

That's very true...I have worked with managers who acted like Florence...and also some who acted like they were the General of the Armed Forces that was just put in charge of the Afghan War Theater.
I have worked as a manager and I hope I fell into the Florence catagory rather than the General catagory.
I always gave the benefit of doubt to the staff that I managed...I hate to use the words-to my staff...they certianly aren't mine....that 's degrading.

True however, call me crazy, but I'm more worried about the guy in a "low" position being a dick than someone in a position of "authority." I'm worried about the guy that drives the snowplow down the street in the winter knocking my mailbox over, or the guys that pick up the trash leaving my garbage cans out in the middle of the street, or the guy making my sandwich using the bread to wipe his ***. Okay, that last one was over the top:clown:, but . . .

True, but the guys who pick up your garbage are making a WHOLE lot more money than we are as nurses.

Oh please. Don't start that virtue script crud and whining about how the less than angelic and "compassionate" behavior of other nurses must surely fly in the face of Nightengalian ideals. Flossie was considered a uncompromising pain in the ***. She was a tireless complainer and criticizer, with no regard for those who felt they were above her, and inflexible and unforgiving toward those she was trying to train into her nursing ideal. She was not patient, she was not understanding and she was not nice. Hers was the only opinion that counted. Her view of things was as single-minded and one-sided as the business aspect of health care has always been, and she was every bit as ****** as the nurses who are "victimizing" you are now.
Geeze, I think I have worked with her!!!!
But I do agree with your post...

you're extremely lucky that your boss's boss is willing to find you a new job. we don't know the details of your situation, but the tone of your post is extremely angry and confrontational and i'm wondering about what started this whole business.

- It really twists my knickers when someone vents about an upsetting situation on this board and a poster infers that they come across as "arrogant, confrontational, etc", thus deserving of the situation they found themselves in. Geeze, leave the poor poster alone - of COURSE they are upset or they wouldn't have started the thread.
I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt that they were given a bum deal - I've spent over twenty years working with nurses and know that a lot of ugly and unprofessional conduct goes on behind the nursing station....but maybe that's a dirty little secret we should not bring out into the open.

Exactly so! Flo definitely knew how to "kick butt and take names." I remember reading about her, many years ago, that, when she was first hired as director of nursing at a London hospital after returning from her studies in Germany, the hospital nursing staff had 100% turnover in the first few months she was there. Every "nurse" there was either fired by Flo or chose to leave rather than work under her.
(Of course, had she not been like this, she never would have accomplished all that she did. You go, girlfriend!! )
