I have a big favor. I know that in texting writing "ur" or "2" for to is acceptable. But honestly, when you post like that, I don't understand what it is your trying to say. I usually just skip over the whole post, because it looks like gibberish to me. Please, this is a nursing forum, not facebook. Can we write in standardized English so we can ALL understand the content? Thank you.
If I have to work harder to decipher your post than I would reading a clinical article, I won't And the same goes for no grammar, no paragraphs on a lengthy post, a whole lot of unnecessary font size/colour/emphasis changes, all caps, or Random Capitalisation - if it's not at the start of a sentence, a proper noun, or being used to empahsis a tiny bit of your sentence then Don't Capitalise It!
Ah, I feel so much better :)
I did not read all the posts, but I think some are using "text speak" because they are on ipads, iphones, other smallish devices and typing is sometimes difficult. But I agree, we all should use standard Engling. Thank you for reminding me of that agreement.
I have tried to press QUOTE to quote this and the system will not let me, so I have had to copy & paste this comment manually.
People all use iPads, iPhones etc. They are here 2 stay whether we like it or not & it's the way of the world. Everyone has moved on with this, maybe AN should to. If people don't like too many abbreviations I suppose either complain to the moderators re it, or don't read the posts.
I remember when the general usage of computers became common, some of the older nurses & other workers refused to use them, even though the training was simple & they didn't have to do much. They were so techno-phobic they would not even touch a computer & still did massive rosters etc by hand. How slow & time consuming!
Move with the times, or get left behind I say.
Carol - I had the same problem when I hit the "quote" button signifying a reply quoting another poster. When I do that I don't get a flashing cursor at all! If you hit the "go advanced" button just under the text box you can't type into you'll get one you can type into. It's a glitch in the system.I have tried to press QUOTE to quote this and the system will not let me, so I have had to copy & paste this comment manually.
You can also use the multi-quote button for just the one quote but you have to go to your account> options> edit settings> and click the enable quote/multiquote box. Sorry if that's TMI! Takes a while to learn the lay of the land! :)
i have no idea what you just said, please splain???

if scott doesn't come back we know the haxors had him come down to their headquarters for a little "chat" about letting just anybody know about their top-secret lingo.

nah it's not that secret. there are other more interesting ways to write. probably the most entertaining is using ascii character codes. 65 108 108 110 117 114 115 101 115 46 99 111 109 32 102 111 114 32 116 104 101 32 119 105 110 33
I personally think that text speak is killing the art of grammar and the English languuage. Grammar has rules yet when used creativley for expression it becomes an art. Decided upon standards help anyone from any language base read English and participate in the ongoing living language. But text speak hopefully will not become the norm. I enjoy well written, well organized statements even on my phone. I always feel a little, well, STUPID, when I try to text without vowels or as if I have no education at all. If I were to do this kind of spelling on a daily basis, I wonder how much REAL spelling and grammar I would forget. I do think it will become the norm and add to the downfall of education in this country. My S. O. doesn't think this way though. He seems to think higher education will always require us to write papers correctly. But as this texting becomes more acceptable, I have to wonder. The language is one way that people can become liberated, joined, and create postitive change in a society. Manipulating a language can also take away freedoms by changing the way people think. And creating ignorance is not going to create independant thought. And really, textspeak looks pretty darn ignorant to me. It looks like a preschooler trying to write. Ugh. It is one of my pet peeves. And I am no old fogie.

No, "everyone" has not moved on with this. I have two young daughters who refuse to use text speak even in their texts.
One could also say that if people don't like the Terms of Service on this web site, they are certainly free to boycott it, start their own, and text speak to their hearts' content.
