I have seen TONS of people who have said "nursing is my second, third or fourth career." As I have become more and more curious I was wanting to start a thread to see what areas and walks of life all the nurses and student nurses had before embarking on this incredible medical journey.
I will go first.
I was a TRUCK DRIVER prior to being a nursing student..
NEXT.
I am excited to see what you all did in your PAST LIVES>>>>>
My first job was a retail sales clerk at JC Penney (16 years old working in the lingerie dept no less). I made it through one Christmas season and turned in my resignation the first of the new year, lol!
Moved on to Human Resources for 2 years and then spent the next 20 in marketing and public relations.
Became a SAHM for 1.5 years with my youngest and then started nursing school this year. God willing and the stars aligned, I'll graduate December 2008.
Great thread!
I was a Certified Medical Assistant prior to becoming a nurse/student nurse. I always knew I wanted to be a nurse. But, I got married young and could not offord to go back to school so I did the medical assisting program because it was quick and I knew I could get at least some experience while waiting to beable to go to school full time as a student nurse as I am now.

I was a legal secretary/assistant for 20 plus years. Hubby and I relocated and started dairy operation again on family farm after in-laws retirement. Decided I needed to change career directions after some negative experiences in legal arena. Here I am, ready to enter nursing school in Fall 08! Wish me luck!!!
I was an insurance agent for most of 25 years ( still do it part time) mixed in with a lot of waitressing, bartending and a newspaper delivery person ususally multiple jobs at the same time. There were 7 years when I was a stay at home mom for my 4 children as well.
I became a nurse nearly 2 years ago at the age of 57 and have worked in a child/adolescent crisis unit ever since. When this population is good it is very good and when it is bad it is horrid. Never boring though.

I ran a service division for a subsidiary of Ricoh corporation, coordinating: customer service, service agreements, technical training, customer dispatch, inventory control, deliveries, computer networking and equipment repair. I was a very busy girl....then I was downsized....my job was split between 5 other managers.
Funny, it took 5 people to do my job. Went to school for nursing...needed something where I could deal with the public...but have a solid and lasting career.
So far I love nursing, although I have to admit ER is starting to wear on me.
