I am having a lot less stressful life these days because I'm just doing a little bit of home infusion and a little bit of Occupational Health. Basically the Occupational Health job is mainly watching Youtube videos and visiting with the security people at a data center construction site. Also I have a lot of time to read . The home infusion is giving special infusions to special people who have special problems. You start an IV and then you very carefully give the infusion. The mother of one of my patients makes excellent Homestyle Mexican food, and is a perfect hostess, plus I buy her tamales and salsa now.

Hey Emergent, couple of questions...

I am looking to leave the abusive hellhole that is nursing especially after today and entering into advanced practice after I have my baby.

Were you nervous to leave the hospital setting? Did you find the transition harder or easier? I am currently looking into occupational health/employee health as an NP....do you think almost 8 years of medsurg is enough?

Thanks in advance!

Specializes in OB-Gyn/Primary Care/Ambulatory Leadership.

Manager of a primary care clinic. Love that I don't have to worry about emergencies and phone calls at 2am, or Sunday afternoons, or Christmas Day.

What I'm doing is probably a lot different then what you are looking into. What I like philosophically about Occupational Medicine is that you are not trying to over treat like the rest of the medical system does. It's a more old-fashioned approach that doesn't jump to get X-rays and doing a lot of interventions.

What I am doing is being the nurse on a data center construction site. I only have to do something if someone needs a Tylenol or sprains his ankle. I don't even have to do pre-employment drug screening.

I think the Occupational Medicine approach is a much healthier one. If you can get one of these Occupational Nurse jobs at a construction site it's a perfect way to study for your nurse practitioner. That's what the main nurse is doing at the site. A friend and I are the relief nurses there and it's a perfect semi retirement job for me. I found the job through Indeed.

Specializes in EMS, ED, Trauma, CEN, CPEN, TCRN.

I am doing clinical appeals for a revenue cycle management company (no longer for the insurance company). I love it! I don't even have a phone number for anyone to call me. ?

Emergent, you sound blissful. That makes me happy!!

Specializes in EMT since 92, Paramedic since 97, RN and PHRN 2021.

I left the ER and went back to the streets..............  Well, no in the oldest profession, but back on the ambulance as a Pre-Hospital Registered Nurse.  I absolutely love it. No bosses, no residents and the best part is that its me and an EMT so as far as clinical decisions, im the boss.

OMG, Bill! That's awesome!! I forgot you were in a state with that role. That really suits you. ?

Specializes in Occupational Health.

Occupational health nursing is the best and not enough nurses know about it! I started after leaving the hellhole that is school nursing. The summers off sound great, until you aren't making any money, spending what little you do make on your own supplies (like teachers), and have zero professional respect.

Occ health on the other hand? Money is phenomenal, total respect along with environmental health services (we work with the MPHs), schedule is great, and I have a corporate credit card for business trips.

Run, don't walk towards occupational health.

I wish...in my area, OHNs are all NPs that are hired on as subcontractors, meaning no benefits, pay own taxes, etc. At my age, not going back to school for that, ROI not worth it

I left the floor and never looked back. Even home health was better.

Eight tears is more than enough. Start getting your pre-reqs in while you work then go for NP. There is a glut of NPs and Occupational Health openings are rare, but you can work almost anywhere else and not on the floor.
