...Was talking to a childhood friend that I haven't seen in a long while when she said :
" I don't know how you can do this, I just couldn't be a nurse, I'm way to soft hearted"
I smiled politely but what I wanted to say was ...
Well duh!!! What do I look like? The Marquis de Sade??
Does anyone else get dumb things like this said to them?
Hi,
I am a 57 yo Student Nurse. I chose nursing in mid-life and am working as a Nurse Extern in the ICU of a regional Med Center. The "zibger" that gets me is when one of our pts die and their well meaning greiving family says, "I guess you must get used to people dying. I does not affect you anymore."
WRONG!!!! AND, I pray God that I never "get used to it" True I don't break down and bawl, but if I ever "get used to it" that will mean I have become a heartless bastard and negate the very reason I chose nursing!!!
Thanks for letting me vent!!
Jim
BTW, I like the combacks for we male nurses. :-)
I work in Oncology. I hate when people say, "Ewwww-how can you work with cancer?" I don't care for cancer, I care for cancer patients and they are awesome!!! Most cancer patients have real attitude and are so appreciative of everything you do vs. the surgical patient that knows he's getting better and I swear is just there to give you a hard time. (Sorry, I know all patient's are not that way) but there is truly something special about oncology patients.
A lot of people give an opinion like that about working in areas like Oncology without even setting foot on a cancer unit or with any clue of what really goes on. Anytime someone makes the "EEEEEW" comments, i quiz them. "Ever been on a (insert your area here)? Well, how do you know it's gross? Ever thought about yourself being (insert your floor here) as a patient yourself? How would you feel if someone said EEEEEW about you all because you have a disease?". Usually that shuts the rudies up.

NURSES ARE THE BACKBONE OF THE MEDICAL PROFESSION. They have saved a good many MD/hospital lawsuits. They are the mediators, the go fers, the med givers, etc. etc.
Just think; Without our backbones, we would be mush!

You tell it Fran!

Eeew, you want to be a secretary? You will have to sit behind a computer and answer a phone all day and make coffee and get carpal tunnel and stuff.

If it's any consolation, there are a ton of people in my nursing prereq classes who already have degrees in computers, marketing, manufacturing, etc...all are back in school for nursing because there's either no jobs anymore in their fields, or the salaries have gone down so much, they can't afford to stay in it.
