...Was talking to a childhood friend that I haven't seen in a long while when she said :
" I don't know how you can do this, I just couldn't be a nurse, I'm way to soft hearted"
I smiled politely but what I wanted to say was ...
Well duh!!! What do I look like? The Marquis de Sade??
Does anyone else get dumb things like this said to them?
When I got accepted into nursing school a doctor in the clinic I was working in asked me why I didn't go all the way and become a doctor. I looked at him and said if all of the nurses in the world decided to "go all the way" there wouldn't be anyone around to do any of his work for him. He said you know? you're right. After that he was very encouraging and helpful with my studies.

I love it when I see patient and they elude to a family member who is a "nurse" who gave them medical advice that made their situation worse or you have an overbearing friend/family member of a patient at the bediside who says "I'm a nurse" and when you question them "what kind of nurse" or where do you work" or "where did you go to school" they get very tight lipped or give a elusive answer. It turns out they are a "sitter" or unlicensed home care provider or nurses' aide (nothing against them but they shouldn't call themsleves nurse) GOTTA LOVE IT!!!!
I have had this happen on occasion and when you start talking to them you find out that they are not a nurse at all but they thought that if you thought there was a nurse in the family the Pt would get better care because there would be someone around to know what was and wasn't being done.
I actually got a person to admit this whole thing to me once, I told her that she was doing more harm than good most likely because the nurses may believe she is here to help explain things and they believe if they give you the details you will then break it down to laymens terms for the famly since you are part of the family and have a full understanding of what is going on you may be able to explain in more familiar manner since you are so close etc.
Then I told her if you are not a nurse you should never claim to be If I told you I was a lawyer and you told me something personal I would have no real liability to keep it confidential because I am not really a lawyer this is the same thing!
I worked in triage one day and I was triaging a young girl. When I asked her her chief complaint, she began to elaborate and her mother said, " Honey, she's the secretary ...she doesn't undestand all that," (And yes, I was wearing my ID). I politely corrected her. Boy was she embarrassed:imbar :imbar
A while back a young man was brought into the ER via ambulance for flu-like symptoms. To be nice, I drew his blood while I was starting the IV so I didn't have to stick him twice. Well I didn't actually get the blood order until an hour later. Well this guy's mother *****ed the entire time( he was a grown man) about how the labs were taking too long(even after explained everything to her, like that he had to be registered before the labs could be sent) and that SHE was a charge nurse in an ER and that this was unnacceptable. I wanted to tell her that if she were really an ER charge nurse she would have known all this and that she wouldn't have rushed an otherwise healthy young man to the hospital for the flu. :(

I was once @ a relative's b/d party when my very quiet, timid, always pleasant grandmother asked me a question about her thyroid medication. When I told her I didn't know the answer and that she should call her Dr.'s office......she totally embarrassed me by speaking loudly: "Well I thought you were a nurse!? You should know!" Sorry grandma
I work home health peds and go to school with my pt when he is well enough. It just so happens that this school is where my daughter (and all of her friends go). Recently my best friend (also a trained nurse) called and said that "everyone @ school thinks you are just a classroom aide. Doesn't that bother you? You are educated and trained and make 3 1/2 x the money that they do."
Well I didn't get into this profession just so I could go around and brag about how glamorous it is and how rich I am! Ha ha ha! If people are looking down at me because they think I'm "only a low paid classroom aide" then their opinion means nothing to me anyway.
heh, all I can think about when people comment on male nurses is....
Jack Byrnes: Greg's in medicine too.
Bob Banks: What field?
Greg Focker: Nursing.
Bob Banks: Ha ha ha ha. No, really, what field are you in?
Greg Focker: Nursing.
We only have two male nurses in the unit I work in..... so the gaylord focker lines come up a lot.
:)
Oh my goodness!
I feel so much better after reading all your replies...
Regarding that male nurse thing, I said this on another thread but I'll tell the story here too...
I once worked with a guy who was a medic in the marines who decided to get his RN. He was a big, very manly man with a deep distinguihed voice and the kindest nature I'd ever seen (he could also tell the funniest jokes I'd ever heard) but he was always being mistaken for a doctor. He tried to combat this by always wearing starched white from head to toe with big red stitching on his shirt that said "XXX (name) RN, BSN, RNC. But when people would call him doctor he would always say
"No, not a doctor, even better, I'm a NURSE!" It made people smile and made him look great!

on a side note that attitude is a real problem. I remember being told when I started working in a nursing home as a nurses aide that part of our payment was that good feeling we were supposed to get form helping people, the guy, the snf director, even said we were adding jewels to our crown in heven for our good deeds. Too bad I can't pawn those jewels to pay my rent...
