...Was talking to a childhood friend that I haven't seen in a long while when she said :
" I don't know how you can do this, I just couldn't be a nurse, I'm way to soft hearted"
I smiled politely but what I wanted to say was ...
Well duh!!! What do I look like? The Marquis de Sade??
Does anyone else get dumb things like this said to them?
People are constantly asking me.... so, when are you going to go to school and become a doctor so you can make some real money?
Is it soo hard to imagine that I actually like being a nurse? Sure, sometimes I have to clean up poop, or blood or other bodily fluids.... etc...
haha... that just gave me an idea for a new topic....
Things that make you go ewww.... :)
I enjoy the challenges of nursing.... I love sticking it to the clock at 7am, after 12 hard hours of work, and saying... "You didn't beat me, I got it all done!" :) And half the time, I AM the doctor! I'm the pharmacist, the case manager, the liason between doctors and families, i'm the counsellor, the referee during family squabbles etc....... and somehow, we still have to fit in patient care and using up a whole pen's worth of ink every shift for charting. :)
Anyway.... AND these same people call ME, the nurse, ALL the time asking me medical questions and expect me, the SICU/Trauma RN to know what to do about a cold! "Well you're a nurse, what do you know then?" Me: "Well, let me know when someone saws open your chest and dismantles the arteries surrounding your heart, replacing them with grafts from your legs!" Maybe then, I'll know SOMETHING that's helpful! Until then, call your family doctor or even the nurse at the doctor's office!
Don't worry, natural selection is hard at work. These idiots can't last that much longer. :)
I'm a 50-year old nursing student, changing careers after being in the computer field for 25 years. My favorite is the people who have said to me, "Well, I just don't see it. You have no bedside manner."
My brother was one of the folks who made that comment. Despite the fact that when my mother was dying, I was the one who handled a lot of stuff, and when she died, I picked out the casket, her clothes, planned the ceremony, etc., while he stood around and boo-hooed.
I think it's because I used to be in software sales, and you do have to have an attitude when you are one of the few females working with a lot of agressive male sales guys.
I guess that I didn't realize that nursing means all I do is sit at the bedside and hold hands with my patients. ;-)
Oldie but goodie
"Oh THAT'S nice, you're going for LPN. Soooo when are ya getting your RN?" Well s**t i'd like to finish this year FIRST before you plan my furture, is that ok???
And the award for the phrase i cannot STAND that ppl say to me the most goes to:
"Oh you're going to be a nurse? My goodness nurses EAT THEIR YOUNG."
Originally posted by ainzI hated it when people said "so, you're a male nurse huh?" Or "nursing must be a stepping stone for you while you go to medical school." And the greatest cliche-like communication to us "male" nurses are the covert suggestive remarks that we must be gay.
I know a nurse who gets the "So, you're a male nurse" remark all the time. He responds with : "Well, I am a nurse, but I don't deliver the mail.":D

I'll be telling our nurse of the male gender at work about this man's response to "male nurse". So far, "I'm not a male nurse, i am a nurse of male gender" has been his only reply.

The first thing my mom said when I told her I wanted to go back to school to study nursing: "Why not just go ahead and be a doctor?" All I could think of to tell her is that after four stays in the hospital I don't remember the docs being there for me 24/7...I do, however, remember those nurses!!

I've got an uncle who is a physician, and of course when he heard I was working on my BSN he told my mother if I was going to spend all that time in school I might as well go "all the way" and become a doctor. Sheesh.....I didn't realize a nurse was just half-a-doctor! Silly me!!! I was under the apparently mistaken impression that they are two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FIELDS!!!!
a different take on the matter..
I love it when I see patient and they elude to a family member who is a "nurse" who gave them medical advice that made their situation worse or you have an overbearing friend/family member of a patient at the bediside who says "I'm a nurse" and when you question them "what kind of nurse" or where do you work" or "where did you go to school" they get very tight lipped or give a elusive answer. It turns out they are a "sitter" or unlicensed home care provider or nurses' aide (nothing against them but they shouldn't call themsleves nurse) GOTTA LOVE IT!!!!

I always talk right to the child and say Nurses don't just give shots to people because their parents want them too we only give shots when the person needs one, then I look at the parent and say and I think you could use a nice shot!

The becoming a nurse to marry a doctor /when you become a nurse you can marry a doctor + become rich I hear so often from my Grandparents - and at present, I'm not even a nurse.
I just nod and smile, 'yeah sure Nan, whatever'.
