I got reported to HR

Nurses Relations

Published

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to post this somewhere to rant... because I can't mention this to any coworkers...

The other day, we had a resource tech/aid on our floor, who was African american with a unique name. And while we were all sitting around the nurses station talking, I said to her "Did your momma name you xxxxxxxx", in which she replied "No my grandma did" -- the only reason I asked this question was because I was curious if the name was a birth name or nick name.

About half an hour later, she told me that she thought what I said was rude to her. She walked away and I followed a minute later and apologized (for what? I don't know, still did anyways)

Today, I found out she reported me to HR for this incident. I don't know whether I should be worried or not because I almost find this ridiculous... and at the same time, if she's playing the racist card and HR is making the decision about it, not my unit director... I could be long gone already?

It's sad that you can offend someone so easily over something so small or innocent. I'm genuinely the kindest person, always helping out and trying to make people laugh! I said this in a total non-malicious way and everyone around us was aware of that. I'm almost angry at the fact she went to HR because there is no way in heck she actually thinks I was trying to be mean!

Should I be worried? Do you find what I said completely inappropriate? It's sad that the lesson I learned is you can't talk to people you don't know I guess. I really enjoy working on my unit... I get along with all the staff so well. I'm just at loss for words right now.

Okay! That's what I get for trying the internet for advice. I would defend myself but that'll just continue on and on. I'll just deal with this on my own. Thanks anyways everybody.

Katie92,

You did nothing wrong. Your question was taken the wrong way. Since she went to HR, you can't try to resolve this at your/her level. Stick to your guns when you talk to HR. Don't back down.

I should mention that fringe presidential candidate Donald Trump is another recent race-baiter due to his very public, racially prejudicial comments about non-Asian minorities.

Trump was not race-baiting. He was accurately describing that some of the ILLEGAL ALIENS, which makes them criminals, are already criminals, rapists, murderers, etc., before leaving Mexico. He also said that there were good people as well. Just don't forget they are already lawbeakers. Look at the news of the Americans getting murdered by these illegals who have been deported time and time again. Or in some cases, serve their time, and don't get deported.

And BTW, Hispanics are not a race.

And BTW, Hispanics are not a race.

I'm fully aware the 'Hispanic' category is not a race. In fact, I mentioned absolutely nothing about Hispanics in my previous posts within this thread, although Mexicans appear to be his current figurative punching bag.

I mentioned Trump has made racially charged comments about non-Asian minorities, since he's also ragged on black people in the recent past.

Anyhow, I hope he stays in the presidential race. If he does, we might have a repeat of the 1992 elections when H. Ross Perot siphoned just enough votes away from former president George H.W. Bush to keep him from getting re-elected. Trump might siphon just enough votes from the more viable Republican candidate to keep them from being elected in 2016.

The question is rude regardless of a persons skin color. If you're such a nice person as you claim you would see why it is.

I don't get how anyone can think white priviledge doesn't exist. I guess one would also believe that attractive and lean priviledge doesn't exist either?

It's not a question of "privilege". I don't see this as a race thing. I see it as someone making fun of another persons name just because it is unique. Rude, yes. Should the person have reported it? Well,I would have liked to see the look on the HR persons face when she said that someone asked me if my Momma had named me.

First World Problems. Problems from living in a wealthy, industrialized nation that third worlders would probably roll their eyes at.

That question was rude, insulting due to the racial undertones and a very intrusive question to ask of anyone, especially a total stranger.

It was, at the very least, insensitive, and, if said in a mocking way, a form of harassment and absolutely reportable.

So if im reading this right, you asked

"Did yo mama name you that?"

And what you meant was

"Is that a nickname?"

You said this out loud? To an african american? To their face? With words? This is what you did ?? Do I have this correct???

:roflmao: please do let us know what HR said about the incident.

///Sigh///

No, she did not say that. Someone changed her words and claimed that is what she said, that is not what she wrote. Please read HER post for what SHE said.

Oh my GOD. Glad to know who the people are on this site that prejudge, don't benefit from white privilege, and are closet racists are. Lol. Wow.

The person who changed her words to something she never said and then implied she was something she's not is race baiting. Lowering one's self to such a lowly level is nothing to be respected.

What are you talking about?

What are you talking about?

You clearly have not read the thread, I don't believe I will take the time to explain it.
