I was fired by an MA at orthopedic clinic

Published

Okay first time writing on the message board I worked at USC in an orthopedic clinic. My manager was an MA who I think was intimidated by me because I was a LVN and she was an MA I followed all the rules and was a team player my agency called me after my shift and said that they did not want me to go back because the manager complained that I did not follow directions im so upset and hurt I am even questioning if nursing is the field I need to be in, I received compliments everyday from staff that I was doing a good job. I do believe the MA did not like me I saw her take medication from the pyxis without authorization because she was not a license nurse. I need some advice.

Why was an MA a manager to begin with? I think that's odd. Did they say what directions you weren't following? And has she ever confronted you with any problems she may have had?

I say be happy that you're out of that place. But I know you are really upset right now. :(

It won't be long before you feel better. Let it go. But if an MA is really accessing meds from the Pyxis and that's really not allowed, then that's reportable.

Brush yourself off, and in the future do not place so much value on whether or not you recieve complements from others. Sure, complements are nice, but know you are skilled and prepared... so others opinions of you do not mold your self image. There will be times in your career you will not please everyone. That is perfectly fine. Dust yourself off and persevere, consider it a blessing you are not there anymore.

I am not sure there is much you can do. Sometimes people will dislike others for no reason.

Good lesson for everyone to never take this type of job with MAs anywhere near it.

My "Peds Clinical" was at a clinic where they had got rid of all the RNs (except one) and replaced them with MAs. They all operated under the sole RN's license. He told me straight out, "This is going to be a rotten clinical for you. The MAs here will hate you because they call themselves 'nurses' and you really are going to be one. They won't let you do anything."

And that's exactly what happened. It was grating hearing those people say, "I'll be your nurse today" to every family.

Good luck in the future!

and I say it again...MA's may not call themselves nurses in MANY states...it is against the law.

While a MA may be your "manager" for scheduling and other duties, they cannot manage you nursing practice.

OP just be glad you got out of there...clearly this is not a place you should be expose your license to discipline because they act out of their scope.

I would be glad I am out of there also.. MA should not dispense meds… but your out of there! Good for you!!!

This is a blessing in disguise. You should be working with fellow nursing professionals. MAs are not your professional nursing peers.

I appreciate all of the comments I guess im so upset because I really worked hard at the clinic and I don't believe I would have lasted anyway because the MA was my boss. I did see the MA take meds from the pxysis and she did not have access to do so I think it was a power trip for her. I just hate having to start all over again. I worked their for 4 weeks and it just seems like a slap in the face. But again I will pick my self up and be smarter the next time I start a new Job.

Again thanks everyone for their support.

A medical assistant calling herself a nurse is illegal in Arizona. Only RNs and LPNs can legally be called nurses. To call a medical assistant a nurse is misleading to the public and harmful to the image of professional nurses.
