Nurses work round the clock during their shifts to make sure that their patients meet the desired outcomes, patients with different disease conditions that demand our intervention failure to which their lives are in danger, people criticize our minor mistake yet they don't appreciate our efforts
I think regarding nursing as a "calling" is something new nurses can easily do before they are faced with what nursing really is.
Nursing isnt about martyrdom and following a ~calling~ for many people. Pursuing a career that is flexible and yes going after the $$$ does not make you a bad nurse.
I have actually never worked with a nurse that was so overt about their "calling" that I was aware of it.The nurses that feel compelled to write about it though should keep this opinion to the spirituality section where I will not see it as I choose a religious-free forum experience.
I agree, not everyone believes in an invisible being called "god". I find it interesting that we can't say anything about that yet they are allowed to spew that crap on a non religious forum.
Sometimes I wonder if the moderators personal beliefs are part of the reason for that.
Restoring someones life back to normal means a lot.its not an easy task compared to other fields.how you think and do matters a lot. You do everything out of self to make sure the bedridden raise on their on!! How you dedicate yourself still matters, you spebd time thinking about your client.you are dealing with human life that's nowhere to be collected or bought, once gone then its gone forever, what you do and how you do matters a lot.THE HOPE OF YOUR CLIENT DEPENDS ON YOU!!! Its a calling from self and God
Client? Nope. Patient.

I have this exact personal opinion. I do not wish to subject myself to that nonsense so I don't go looking for it, yet, it invades my space uninvited and unwelcome.

You're overthinking this. Sometimes you can't restore someone's life "back to normal". Sometimes the outcome is less than desirable. Saying that you do everything to make the bedridden "raise on their own" is a bit far-fetched and an oxymoron. Really, take it down a notch.
I believe people who are "called by God" are either nuns or priests. That's it.

I think we should cut the OP some slack. For one thing, her English isn't really that hard to understand, so what's the point in insinuating she speaks it poorly?
Second, perhaps in her native country it isn't as unusual to describe nursing as a calling. While it's not quite the same here, we could have had the chance to have a window into what nursing is like in Swaziland. Instead, she's probably been chased off this thread, maybe this site, for good.
This is an international site for nurses, not a site strictly for nurses in the US.
agree!!

Gotta agree with that one. Seems that often the ones who go to apply to nursing school because they felt the breath of God in their hair are the ones who are the most shocked to find that, at least in this secular country, most people do not feel that way, and that they will have to learn a lot of cold hard science to be a nurse. Then they discover that a lot of their patients are not the grateful suffering poor that Mother Teresa gets ink for. Then if they graduate and get jobs they discover that their management doesn't give a rat's patootie about their being called or not, so long as they come in to work overtime when they get the call from the evening supervisor.Calling? It's a job. It's a job. It's a job. For further opinions from working nurses, please go to the top of the screen and type in "nursing is a calling" in the search box in the yellow stripe. You will be busy for hours.
And, for some of us that nursing IS a calling for....when we discover those things, we keep on going. Because it is a calling. For some people it is not, and that is not a bad thing. For some people it is, and that is not a bad thing. It is hard to understand how it can be and why it is a calling when one doesn't experience it that way. I'm not Mother Teresa by a long shot, but, I know that nursing is part of my calling in life. But, I also am very aware that I have a greater responsibility BECAUSE it is my calling to my patients, my colleagues, and my God. I suppose that not everyone who views it as a calling sees it that way, but they have to determine within themselves what it means.

It is possible for someone who is not a nun nor a priest to be called by God. I'm neither, far from it. But, I have known since I was a girl of 10 that part of my calling in life would be to be a nurse.

The only calling I have is to stay in bed all day, but I've yet to find someone to pay me for that. Nursing pays the bills just fine and I can only work 3 days a week if I want.
