I feel like they should change the title of this site to "reasons why my job sucks"

Nurses Relations

Published

People on here need to realize that when you complain on here (and for some that all those individuals do) it really dissuades us new grads from continuing into the profession. First and most obvious question, Does anyone actually like being a Nurse? I mean granted I don't think anyone loves all aspects of their job, but does it seem like a nightmare every day? Secondly, name the best part of your area and your biggest pet peeve.

Sorry had to rant.

When I first joined this site, I was a new grad, 2.5 years ago. I remember thinking, "Wow. Some of these posters are harsh." Only for a very short period of time, because I came here to learn, and I went to work to learn. A few nurses gave me the cold shoulder at first. They didn't know me, and I never let that bother or intimidate me. I didn't ever tell the nurses how they should do their jobs, and I still wouldn't. We all have various ways of working, and like it or not, there is a pecking order. Eventually, people tend to come around, but you have to prove yourself first. If you are willing to learn, there are few problems. However, if you are perceived as self centred, or entitled, that's when the problems begin. Not just in nursing, either. Every workplace has politics.

I didn't read all of the comments, but I have actually had several CNAs tell me "I wanted to be a nurse but now that I've been a CNA I'm definitely not going to because of how much you nurses seem to hate your jobs". One even said "I haven't seen one nurse who seemed to like what they do"

Just want to take a moment and revisit something I want to advocate for: it's time to close the board to nurses only, members only. You can only come on a forum so many times and be distracted by the bNewcomers that refuse to search for information before posting another redundant thread or another thread from a judgmental nursing student or new grad. This is the break room for me, a place to freely complain and get advice anonymously. (Contrary to some posters who are convinced if you vent here you must be a witch in person). Just saying: I told you so!

I've thought this for a long time. Or at least restrict patients, wanna-be's, pre-nursing and nursing students to "read only" for forums outside the "Student" forum. Maybe we could have a "Break Room" that would have some kind of limitation; it would be very easy to verify how many years exp. a poster has. I agree with you on having an issue with being judged by people who either aren't nurses or haven't been in the game long enough to appreciate how things can wear you down..

My two cents to this whole conversation is that it seems that your professional team really makes or breaks your job-satisfaction. A lot of nurses on this site complain that they have to report to overly strict bosses. I definitely saw that on one of my clinical sites- the manager would publically berate all of her employees for the most minor details. After that, I precepted on a floor where the manager practically let the nurses get away with murder. One day, I let one of the nurses know that her patient told me he was having chest pain. Even though I gently repeated myself and asked "Do you want me to help you with anything?" she just glared back at me without saying anything. Her manager was standing right next to her the whole time, and after about 15 seconds of her just staring at me, he had to gently persuade her to go do an EKG. If it had been any other nurse manager, she would have gotten her head bitten off. For all I know, she's one of the venters on this site, complaining about what a "mean" taskmaster she has to work for. And maybe the actually-mean nurse manager is also here, venting about what "lazy" people she has to work with.

OP, always expect, anywhere you go, to have a bombardment of people angry at you for not knowing everything. Lol, it isnt our fault that we are going into uncharted territory and people on here cant be civil long enough to say "I was once where you are; not knowing if this was for me. People constantly making me worry if I would regret becoming a nurse." You are not wrong for letting people on here know that we worry. We are human. If they want to try to rain down on you, don't let them. Simply say, you could have just been kinder, and move on to people with RESPECTFUL and constructive criticism. There are always people angry enough to redirect their frustration out on us. It will happen. You are bringing it to their attention that they are making many new grads feel discouraged. They in turn feel like you are trying to take away the right to post on AN. That can feel emotionally threatening to many as you can plainly tell from this thread. They are not new grads anymore, that is not a concern or something they care to, from this point on, consider when they post. Once we are nurses however, do not be shocked if you, me and other new grads alike come straight to AN to vent how we hated something like lost a premie or something tragic. Nurses deal with so much that I don't even know about or understand yet. I have respect for them and know that they are soldiers in the workforce of health. They are "taking the bullet" for people and it is amazing. Everyone is different and at different places in life. No one will have the exact experience as another so we will be ok. You just have to be brave enough to take the posts you choose to read with a grain of salt. But people could be nicer on here in response i will admit that. Just the truth.:whistling:
