I Don't Want To Take 9 Prerequisite Courses :-(

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I will be applying to accelerated bsn programs in January, but the programs that I have been looking at so far say that I need to take 8-9 prerequisite courses in order to apply, that's A LOT of school to cram into a summer and the fall semester. Which Accelerated BSN Programs have the least amount of prerequisite courses to complete before applying?

I can't answer that, since it's different for schools all over the country. But 9 prereques sounds normal. I'm assuming you already have a BA and that's why your going for accelerated? If its been more than 5 years since you graduated every school I've heard of will make you retake all sciences and maths.

Yeah, I have a BA and a MS already (I'm only 23, so my brain needs to relax before I begin my BSN journey)...so I'm not looking forward to all those prerequisites:-) Thanks for the response.

I'm taking 8 classes (5 classes 3 labs) this semester to finish off prerequisites. I don't know what other responsibilities you have, but I have a full time job and I'm able to find time for every class. I don't imagine that these eight classes would be any more difficult than the accelerated program. If you believe you can get through that, you should be able to make it through the prerequisites in two semesters.

That's true. Thank you.

But in the long run in will be worth it. In my first semester of my BSN, we had 7 courses. You'll find that with one or two of those courses, you might be able to take short cuts somewhere. For example, I found my nutrition course (1 of the 7) was easy, so I did the assignments and went to class. Skipped all the reading and still got an A :) Good luck!.

Take some classes on-line like ethics, nutrition, etc. I did microbiology online through Kansas City Community College which I highly recommend. The course was less expensive then my instate tuition plus I saved commuting time (gas, parking, wear and tear). University of Northern Colorado has a few on-line courses that you can complete within a year (for nursing classes like patho). I would personally stay away from Maricopa Community College in AZ-I found the chemistry class to be challenging, too high of a passing score without a lot of support.

That sounds pretty common to me. Most of the prerequisites you really NEED. You need to know that basic info before you can understand some of the nursing curriculum. Ex. Anatomy and Physiology is probably a prerequisite. You need to understand how the body should be functioning normally to understand the pathophysiology of disease processes.

Hey, at my school we have to take 11 pre-reqs for the ADN program and that is only if you are up to speed at math, had Chem in high school and can pass the biology proficiency test. I took 3 math classes and chemistry so for me its 15 pre-reqs just to get into a program that earns me an associates degree!

Girl, guy, your just gonna have to do it! If being a nurse is really what you want, it will all be worth it in the end! I remember thinking the same way though when I first got started and it's gone by soooo fast. I'll be finished with it all in Dec.

My school as well....11 pre-reqs, and like you said that is only if you are up to speed on math. If not, it could be up to 14-15 for an ADN program...I would have been thrilled with only 8!

Dang! That sucks :-( Good luck with that! If I were you, I'd research 3 year BSN programs in your state....may as well do an extra year and have a bachelor's degree instead! :-)
