HS student with odor, call nurse?

Lol, I can chuckle now. But a teacher just called me to ask if I had something for a (regular) student in her class who has an odor. I don't have deodorant, nor mouthwash so I said I had nothing. She said, "Really?" I said, yes, really, I have nothing. She asked if the front nurse maybe had something. I said, call her and see. She is younger with tons of snacks for preschoolers I mean high schoolers, lol, so who knows. Parents are not coming so I told her to send them to the bathroom. No orders for what I bring with allergies and stuff. Do you have stuff for odors on students. Now in elementary that's different but high school?

Sometimes it isn't just the underarms but the whole body. Some people have skin that leaks the food they eat.

I had to shower after PE, but that was back in ancient times. My kids never did and my oldest is 37.

No shower after PE. In fact we have no actual gym or locker room, so students wear their PE uniform all day on a PE day. PE is outdoors or a short walk to an indoor facility we rent.

Most of the kids smell fine with this.

Off topic...just curious....

Do schools even require this anymore or have they ever required it?? I went to HS in the 80's we didn't shower - I think we had something like 5-7 minutes to change into our regular clothing and get to the next class before the tardy bell rang.

My own kids who graduated in 2014 & 2016 didn't have this requirement either. My youngest was even in drill team had practice daily at 6:45am for 2 hours & had DT class for 1.5 hrs during the day- she never showered after practice/class until she would get home - gross I know, LOL but they just don't.

I myself would have been horrified if made to shower - the gym shower did not have any privacy - just a big shower with about a dozen shower heads around it - what kid is going to shower out in the open in front of everyone???

No one showered in my school or my kids'.

Again, what is the big stinking deal?!

Back in the '80's we weren't required to. I went to wrestling practice, the practices that make football players puke, and we wouldn't shower after. We would just go home.

Down here in the hot, humid South, I wish students were required to shower. I have many hot, stinky kids coming through my clinic, and it's only March.

i tend to crack up a bit when teachers complain that one kid stinks then in the next breath complain that another kid has too much cologne on (ok, who am i kidding, it's axe). Just no pleasing some people.

I was never required to shower. I know they are not now. We do have showers and occasionally kids will use them if they have the water turned off at home. I have deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, mouthwash, towels and washcloths, clean socks-you name it. I know it's not medical stuff, but where else would it be stored and some of our kids really appreciate it. Don't use it all the time, but often enough. I purchase some but most is donations from the community.

Funny, I was just thinking back to all those 80's movie scenes where there are always all the football players or girls showering in those big, open showers in the locker rooms. I grew up in the 80's but my school did not even have a gym so we never showered.

That's what they looked like, and my school was brand new when I started in 1981.

At my school, the class periods are too short to allow for showers, and students don't have towels to use unless they bring their own. Most of our athletic classes take place at the main campus, and kids ride a shuttle bus back to our 9th grade campus for the next class. They leave class early in order to catch the shuttle, so there is definitely no time for a shower. The only complaints that I get about students being stinky are about the girls who take dance here on our campus.

My son goes to a different high school in the same district, and they have much longer classes (block scheduling). His cross country coach requires them to shower after morning practice, and towels are provided. Their shower room is one big tiled room with no door, and shower heads every few feet apart. I guess they get used to it quickly!

Kinda had a student smell in my office, and the way her hair felt and seem (black hair), it looked like she was due for a new hair fixing, but I didn't want to be rude, so I used a different method to get information about her, basically put, I had a student with a neck hurting, poss. slept wrong way, and I was alt, ice and heat to give him the sensation of icy hot stuff. I said, "You know what also helps with muscle pains? Hot baths, it helps the muscle a bit. Do you take baths or showers when your neck hurts?" I asked the little girl and she said she does baths, and she did yesterday. So now I knew, that it's just BO, not because she's dirty. I'm not sure if I should tell mom or not, but I just hope she won't get made fun of.
