Hi all you fellow texans! I'm a future nursing student, and I live in the Dallas area.

Whoa there a sec... how do you figure TX nurses are some of the lowest paid? Sorry, I don't mean to jump down your throat.
I have seriously considered leaving TX after grad (I'm an ADN student) for a change in weather. I've done a LOT of research on RN salaries all around the country (especially TX, AZ, NM, NV, ID, OR and WA) and TX nurses (esp here in Houston) are some of the best paid in the country when you take into account cost of living. Harris County Hospital District starts RNs at $21.63/hr according to their website. I know a newgrad ADN (a client) who started at Memorial-Hermann last summer for $22.50/hr with NO prior nursing experience. Based on what I've read on this board in the last year, that's far above what most of the RNs elsewhere are making.
If I'm in error, someone please correct me.
However, as I know many teachers and a few police officers, I agree with you in thise two careers. I've been an RVT (veterinary equivalent to an RN) for just shy of 10 years and I know I'm a bit below national average in pay.
This is my first posting! I'm so glad to have found this site and plan on sharing it with my other nurse friends!
I hope to find new friends here as well.
I am an LVN, have currently gone back to school full-time to pursue a BSN degree and live in Quitman, TX. (Little east Texas town - in the middle of everything and close to nothing)
:roll
I'm an RN in the Texas panhandle. I currently work in dialysis. The wages are fairly low here. Seems the smaller the town, the smaller the wage. LVNs start at $10. an hour at the unit where I work. Also, there is not a nursing "shortage" in my area, so there aren't many jobs.
On a more positive note, I think the state forums are a really cool idea.
