How well does misogyny work out in your facility?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

An article passed my way last night written by an East Carolina University student arguing about the availability of birth control in the student health center.

What was really disturbing wasn't thebile spewed towards women taking responsibility for themselves (advocate for birth control or not, I'm not here to argue that one). It was that this young man is a senior in the nursing program.

The article was slightly sanitized on the site, but it was captured for all eternity on the internet. I suggest reading it (if you can stomach it!).

http://rebekahtodd.tumblr.com/post/10814214583/east-carolinian-releases-outrageous-column-on-birth

That's right! This young man is going to be entering our ranks in a few short months!

Someone who believes that a woman who engages in sex is actually a prostitute.

Someone who wants to be in an industry around a large majority of coworkers that will be offended when he insults them for having a ******** (but he uses the real word).

Someone who wants to be a nurse, but doesn't know that his case of the sniffles is going to be treated with fluids and rest.

If you were a preceptor and one of your students acted like this, what would you think about their ability to provide adequate and equal care? Would a nursing instructor think he was sleeping in his nursing ethics class and not paying attention to the section on triage in his textbook? More importantly, if young Ben Cochran passes his NCLEX and is licensed, what is a nursing manager going to think when she googles his name before the interview and this is the number one hit?

If he becomes a nurse someday, I'm going to be ashamed on behalf of my gender. I apologize in advance to all of you ladies.

ETA: I forgot to mention that I don't believe the apology in the editorial. His Facebook page shows him gloating about receiving all of the attention and hate mail.

I thought you meant miscegenation instead of misogyny i am glad i read

Let's make and cut out a bunch of commas and mail them to him, because I don't think he has enough. He could even turn some upside down and (mis) use them as apostrophes. It's hours of punctuation fun for when his butt gets kicked out of Nursing school and he has to change his major to English.

Oh wow, we would send him some ellipses and semicolons too. His head would explode. :specs:

He doesn't really get across his point, which I think was that dispensing BC is somehow wrong. The problem 99.9% of people have is not what he is saying but HOW he is saying it. Read the article. It is eye widening.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the article has provided Mr Cochrane with precisely what he sought - his Andy Warhol 15 minutes of fame. Time up, drop the subject and stop pandering to it. Do not hit on his FB page, consign the article to the appropriate dirtbin. Let him seek attention from his mother, if she hasn't disowned him....

Poor judgment - yes. Malice and poor character - I don't think so. I also believe he will have a very hard time finding a job upon graduation. It is also a shame that he has so poorly represented his College of Nursing - a wonderful learning institution that has produced many outstanding stellar nurses.
*emphasis mine*

I agree that it's extremely poor judgment and it's not malice.

Although I'm not sure about his 'character' - if he'd had a semi-decent one, he wouldn't have aired his thoughts in public, much less put it in writing and print. This has neither markings nor makings of satire.

cheers,

I guess I have heard enough crazy idiots in my lifetime to just keep dismissing them.

Nothing to see here, move along.

I hope he realizes he chances of getting laid until people forget about this is slim to none.

The article left me agog. But why in the world, after reading such offensive meanderings would anyone go to his Facebook site to read even more? If the article was offensive, what do people expect is going to be on his Facebook page. Puppies, unicorns and rainbows?

The best thing that could happen for this "young man" is that he get as little attention as possible, not multiple Facebook hits.

I don't think anyone expected "puppies, unicorns, and rainbows" on his FB page (I know I didn't). I think it is/was a desire to get a better idea of the author as a person, to see if HE had made any comments about it, etc. I assumed he was no better than he represented himself, and I was correct. Sometimes you just need/want the confirmation.

Not excusing this behavior, but methinks he is an immature young twenty-year-old who has made a very bad mistake. Unfortunately, I have seen a fair number of students just like him in my career as a nursing instructor. He will learn from this mistake, but it will be a very costly and painful process. His brashfulness and bravado is just a cover - I do believe he is feeling extreme remorse right now. "Experience is a good teacher, but its dues are heavy." Poor judgment - yes. Malice and poor character - I don't think so. I also believe he will have a very hard time finding a job upon graduation. I don't think there's any remorse involved...."ha ha keep the hate mail coming!" (as he stated on his FB page) does not QUITE lend itself to being sorry, or realizing that he made a mistake.

I don't know how similar this is as i didn't even read the article............but what about all of the pharmacist who refuse to dispense plan B or other similiar type things. my guess is this student will fit right in in some locations. not everywhere in this country is a liberal or modern thinking US city....

Not similar at all. It's not the fact that the premise of the article was supposed to be a stand against birth control being dispensed on the college campus, it's the vile language and blatant misogyny that has people fired up. If he had made an intelligent, well-researched, concise, and clear argument to that effect, no one would care.

I agree. And the responses to the East Carolinian newspaper's defense of their decision to publish the piece are very interesting.

The most recent response references all nurses.

"Here's the discussion of Ben Cochran at allnurses.com: https://allnurses.com/general-nursing-discussion/how-well-does-623981.html

Ben should switch careers; he's finished in that one."

Malice and poor character ...the choice of words used by this man certainly indicate malice to me!
