An article passed my way last night written by an East Carolina University student arguing about the availability of birth control in the student health center.

What was really disturbing wasn't thebile spewed towards women taking responsibility for themselves (advocate for birth control or not, I'm not here to argue that one). It was that this young man is a senior in the nursing program.
The article was slightly sanitized on the site, but it was captured for all eternity on the internet. I suggest reading it (if you can stomach it!).

That's right! This young man is going to be entering our ranks in a few short months!
Someone who believes that a woman who engages in sex is actually a prostitute.
Someone who wants to be in an industry around a large majority of coworkers that will be offended when he insults them for having a ******** (but he uses the real word).
Someone who wants to be a nurse, but doesn't know that his case of the sniffles is going to be treated with fluids and rest.
If you were a preceptor and one of your students acted like this, what would you think about their ability to provide adequate and equal care? Would a nursing instructor think he was sleeping in his nursing ethics class and not paying attention to the section on triage in his textbook? More importantly, if young Ben Cochran passes his NCLEX and is licensed, what is a nursing manager going to think when she googles his name before the interview and this is the number one hit?
If he becomes a nurse someday, I'm going to be ashamed on behalf of my gender. I apologize in advance to all of you ladies.
ETA: I forgot to mention that I don't believe the apology in the editorial. His Facebook page shows him gloating about receiving all of the attention and hate mail.

Where does it say he is going into nursing? His FB says "English Language and Literature - Management Science".
Looks like maybe he drank a little too much Robitussin when he wrote that article.

I was shocked by this article. I do not understand how somebody who is entering the nursing profession could write such derogatory, uninformed comments pertaining to the health of women. Since I am still a student, it is upsetting to see somebody think that Student Health Services are only around for somebody who is sick with a cold or cough. At my current university the Student Health Center is there for everybody to use for minor illnesses and conditions including female reproductive problems. It is sad to see that he is going to be responsible for the care of all types of individuals as a nurse. I hope is able to overlook his biases when taking care of people because the unedited version is very disgusting.

How do you know that he is a nursing student?

Some one should take a knife and make a "hatchet wound" for him.
Okay. Not really, but what a buffoon. He should be branded with a scarlet A for a**hole. If the college were such a pillar of intellectual exellence, how the hell did he get in????

Me thinks that there is at least one college male, that is facing a lot of really cold lonely nights.

If you click on the link for his Facebook page from the article, he has an open profile/wall....
Around the middle of September he references being in nursing lab, clinical etc. Studying for "medsurg" sounding classes and topics
Scary stuff

I'm reading things that say it's referenced in the article; that I don't see. But yes, his FB page mentions med/surge [sic], gerontology, clinicals, etc.
Oy. Too much to say on this, probably pointless. I do find it particularly amusing that while he's ranting on about women going to Student Health for birth control (needlessly), he's been waiting 30 minutes (the horror!) to be seen for a cold (....needlessly).

Oh my.
It appears someone got a little grouchy while waiting for his free robitussin from the clinic.
But please.... have you SEEN the male/female ratio in nursing schools lately? Please, don't even worry. He'll either straighten up, or get ripped to shreds if he keeps spewing off like that.

I can see a debate like this happening at a Catholic or Baptist college, but not a state university.
