Sit where they can see you; eye contact is good if they can see you're paying attention. PAY ATTENTION. When she asks questions, do your best to answer them. Don't talk to the point where people wonder if you know how to shut up. Ask a thoughtful question, not one where the answer is likely to be "if you'd read the chapter...".

Make an appointment to see an instructor during her office hours. Don't keep sticking your head in her door to see if she's free. Some don't mind drop-ins (and they're likely to let you know up front that they have an "open door" policy), but some really plan their schedules down to the wire and it is disrespectful to keep interrupting them unannounced. Figure out what kind of instructor you have (open door or appointment only).

Ask for clarification to show you are thinking a problem through, but don't do it so often she wonders if you're thinking at all. Ask her opinion on a situation where she has a particular expertise or affinity....if you know she just LOVES lecturing on diabetes, for instance, ask to pick her brain about something you were curious about....you get the idea.

Don't BS any of them. They'll know. There's a difference between seeking to go as far as you can by gaining as much knowledge as possible and trying to smarm your way through. If you come off as seeking only to impress them so they write you a recommendation to go to graduate school and get good jobs (as you basically did in your original post), you won't succeed, only annoy them. Most instructors want to know that you have a burning desire to be the best nurse possible, not that they are being manipulated into writing references for you. If they get the idea that the job is what is motivating you and not the desire to be a clone of Florence Nightingale, they'll be less than impressed with you.

Be prepared for class and clinicals. NO instructor likes to hear that you were up late studying for someone else's test and that's why you never even looked at the assigned reading for today.

Earn your exam scores and grades for written assignments. Don't waste time trying to convince the instructor that if only she'd worded the question differently, you absolutely would have chosen the correct answer. She liked how she worded it, she won't like that you are arguing about it. Question why an answer is wrong or right SO THAT YOU CAN GET IT RIGHT NEXT TIME, but not so that she feels you are demanding a grade change.

Does this help? Or have you run screaming from the room yet? :)

Remember what the professor mentions on the first day of class - record it if you have to - and use it later in the semester. It could be a suggestion for outside reading, or a special project topic, or even a little comment on a current event. If you remember tiny details of that first class, later, when the professor might not even remember exactly what was said, you will be impressive.

I think that if you go to class and do an outstanding job that it should be enough.

The best way to impress a professor is to not TRY to impress them! DO what is expected and that in itself is enough. There is always that one student who tries too hard to stand above the crowd and it is so obvious to the instructor, not to mention insulting, and to your classmates.

Be yourself, be organized, do what is expected, and be on time, that is all you need to do! It's that easy.

Nursing school isn't ABOUT pleasing the professor.

Nursing school isn't ABOUT pleasing the professor.
