The wonderful thing about nursing is that it is open to everyone of all ages. Please give a cheer to all the people who believe that age is not a factor in learning. And, to all the people who strive for knowledge regardless of age. How old were you when you started nursing school?

I am a missionary and have traveled the world and now that everyone is grown and on their own, I decided to do it! I am very happy and feel confident that I will succeed. I have three more classes to take before I can take the NLN to enter the nursing program. I do find that there can be a lot of "age discrimination" especially with my advisors.......
You can & you WILL!!
I have taken all my pre-reqs and applied to the Nursing program a week ago..should hear mid June. I stand a pretty good shot, good GPA and Teas of 84.7. I'll let you know how I make out...if accepted into the program I will start in late August and will have turned 57 by that time....you are truly as young as you feel, and in this profession, life experience gives a little edge. You have seen things and understand things some younger students do not and that can help you in how to deal with older patients etc. Good luck!!

When I first started working as an LPN I was 19 and looked even younger. I had some of my patients take one look at me and request another nurse because they said I couldn't possibly know what I was doing because I was so young. I went through this from that time all the way through my 20's. It was very frustrating. Of course at 41 I now wish I could hear that again! Lol!

I am a newlywed and blessed to have a husband who encouraged me to pursue this childhood dream of becoming a nurse. I am finishing my prerequisites over the summer and will start RN classes in August. I already have a M.Ed. but nursing has always been in my heart. I am 55 years old. I'm glad to comments posted by others of similar age. (too bad there isn't a gray-haired emoticon!)

I was 55 when I started college for the very first time and I will enter nursing school this August! I'm as nervous as I am excited. It's taken me a while to get there but I feel it will be worth it! Best of luck!!
