The wonderful thing about nursing is that it is open to everyone of all ages. Please give a cheer to all the people who believe that age is not a factor in learning. And, to all the people who strive for knowledge regardless of age. How old were you when you started nursing school?

DAWR: I'm happy and proud of you. I'm trying to convince my 57 y/o sister to do something constructive with her free time. Hope she does it. When I took Geriatrics at nursing school, I used to say "that is not me" I know that later on many many yrs from now I might have some deficiencies. But I was surprised when I used to explain nursing content to my colegues in their 20's all the time. I do have a good memory.

I was 16 when I started my actual nursing classes. I went to a high school that offered a CNA and LPN program. Graduated when I was 17, found out I passed my NCLEX on my 18th bday xD.

The above is post #10 in this thread... and yes, I'm quoting myself. The reason I'm quoting myself is simple, this is an update!

As above, I started Nursing School when I was 37. Three years and a bit of experience later (I learned a lot and somehow earned a lot of respect), I graduated at 40 with an ADN and I just became licensed as an RN. Yes, it's all very possible to not only start "later" in life, it's very possible to overcome a bump in the road that requires you to repeat coursework that extends your initially expected graduation date.

With some hard work, determination, and a knowledge of how you learn best you can definitely get through Nursing School even if you're not in your 20's!!! I must say, however, that your energy reserves are often a bit lacking, so you might not be as able to party with the younger crowd and still get up in the morning so bright-eyed and bushy-tailed... but you'll still be able to wear them down because you'll be the steady performer all day long!

Something I also almost forgot to mention, you'll also probably have an easier time building a quick rapport with the elderly as they won't see you in the same light as those 20-somethings... nor will you act like those 20-somethings anyway.

Im 26, will be 27 this November and I am just starting my pre-requisites with 2 young daughters. Ill be 27 hopefully when I start my nursing program, 29 when I finish, probably 30 by the time I become an RN. Then hopefully I get my RN to BSN online and finish by the time Im 33...... Anywhoo, my goal is to become a CNM by the time I am 35-40. :-) Got a loooong way to go.
