*Puts on armor*
Eh, I'm going to get flamed for this, but here goes. My supervisor is going back to school for her BSN. She's been in school for about a year now, but hasn't done too many essays or papers. Why not? Because she has the nursing staff doing her school work for her. I have no idea how she manages to pass since different people have different writing styles, but whatever.
I'll admit, I wrote one paper. I'm against cheating and I cringed while doing it, but the "I'm 60, how can my school expect me to learn APA at my age" talk won me over. I have a soft spot for people like that (my mother was the exact same way but never got to finish school) but now my supervisor is asking me to do a whole research project . I need to tell her no, but I'm not really sure how.
I already told myself I will never help her cheat again, but now I need help telling HER that without succumbing to her "I can't do this, I need you" speeches.

You. Have. Got. To. Be. KIDDING. Seriously?!?!?!
I can not wait to go back and read other's responses, however, quoting a nurse who I admire on here...."what a passive/aggressive cluster"
She does realize that there are computer programs that put things in APA format for one, no? She also realizes that there's software that will even type to a spoken voice, therefore, she could just talk and have papers done, right?
I would say simply this "let me show you were the program is that will turn things into APA for you. I can not help you cheat, as in fact, when you are caught you will be expelled from school.....
If she is doing a "I am your supervisor therefore help me or your work life will be hades" THEN this is unethical, illegal, and needs to be handled by someone high up on the food chain.
Your Mom wasn't able to finish school. Perhaps it was her character that wouldn't even THINK of pulling a stunt like this.
And JUST when I thought I had heard it all.....
Take off your armour. What is frightening to me is that in fact she has ya'll convinced that this is your obligation----and your fault. Twisted and manipulative. She will make an INCREDIBLE manager with all that under her belt....
I have a feeling this is what calivianya is responding to. I never said this would impact her nursing skills. I said she's going to get positions and influence she hasn't earned, and could impact a lot of people from them. And if this is her character, that's a bad thing.
Ahhhh, well, I do agree with this. Although at 60, I'm not sure she's looking upward as much as she is looking to appear to make the effort long enough to keep her supervisory position. We have an LPN who has been getting her RN for years and years, just so she doesn't get phased out like the whole entire hospital's LPN staff has over recent years. One class here, one class there..... Gotta give it to her - she knows how to play the game.

Lookit jade all twitching out and flouncing! I love it!!! Sending big puffy hearts your way.
A nurse who commits academic dishonesty is probably not going to have any qualms about faking VS, or falsely documenting on safety checklists and the mandated restraint and seclusion nursing interventions.
A shift supervisor has control of staffing, and possibly scheduling and performance reviews. This is probably very political.
Passive aggressive cluster is a perfect description of how this woman is mocking her new boss by enlisting the staff to help her fake the work for her BSN.
I'm wondering if I should be insulted because no one has ever had the nerve to ask me to write a paper for them? LOL. There is no way however unlike the poster who wouldn't even share flash cards I was generous with my study materials and information I happened upon that might be helpful for fellow students.

Unscrupulous people look for gullible and kind hearted people to be their marks. Don't be insulted. You must have a good filter for that kind of shenanigans.
Wow, some people are really ballsy. I've had classmates ask me for papers that I've written years ago for classes they're in now, I've had classmates (in the same class as me!) ask me to send them my papers and assignments, presumably to cheat, but I have NEVER been asked to do an assignment for someone. Wow.
You can of course just say no and maybe even report her to the college, which I would do. I don't mind helping people learn, but when they ask me to DO it for them, they will get NO help from me.
you can offer to help her learn APA (it's really not hard....) or proofread her paper
You can suggest she sees a writing coach at her college (my college supplies writing tutors for free to the students) or she can ask the college's librarians.. the ones at my school are very knowledgable in APA and how to use the databases.
Or you can slap this on her desk (http://www.library.dal.ca/Files/How_do_I/pdf/apa_style6.pdf) the next time she gives you a sob story about learning APA format (my teacher gave those to us the first day of class and it's really helpful)
either way, good luck!
There's nothing magic or confusing about APA citations. I have no idea why people can't follow the directions and the exemplars as a matter of routine. As for buying papers online, it's not hard to do. As an editor, I often run things through plagiarism-detection software; believe me, the faculty can do the same.
Here's a cheat sheet for the three major citation models for the same article. Print it out and give it to her. Done. Note differences esp in punctuation:
MLA: Waters, Catherine M. "Understanding and supporting African Americans' perspectives of end-of-life planning and decision making." Qualitative Health Research 11.3 (2001): 385-398
APA: Waters, C.M. (2001) Understanding and supporting African Americans' perspectives of end-of-life planning and decision making. Qualitative Health Research 11(3), 385-398
Chicago: Waters, Catherine M. "Understanding and supporting African Americans' perspectives of end-of-life planning and decision making." Qualitative Health Research 11, no. 3 (2001): 385-398
APA needs that hanging indent though!!
But you are right: get on Purdue Owl or pull open the handful of pages in the APA book that you actually need at that level, and just follow the examples for each type of citation!
