How much would you have to win to quit working as a nurse? How much would it take?

If you won a billion dollars today, how many hours per week would you work as a nurse?

Specializes in Med-Surg.

Ehh....that's a no return to work for me, Doc.

Specializes in Cardiac, ER, ICU.

I would still work, but definately not full time nights! I love being a nurse, can't imagine not doing it at all, but not feeling the financial stressors would make my life so much better!

Man, I finally got a position in a unit that I really really (did I say really???) enjoy, and work with a group of people that I genuinely LIKE. I agree that an even million (after taxes) can go a Loooooonnnnng Waaaayyyy, but I don't think I'd quit my job for it -- more like pay off all debt, do a little work around the house, squirrel some away (invest), and take some nice vacations.

Sure, I don't have to work if I don't want to, but I do. My husband earns a good wage and my children are small. If I won a million dollars that would not change. I would still work the same hour per diem. Nursing keeps me aware of what real problems are in life so it keeps my life and problems in perspective.

Boredom kills. A lot of money without a plan for how you will spend the very long hours of you day just leads to trouble.

Specializes in ED.

I think I would keep working, perhaps one day a week.

I'm not 100% sure but I love constitutional law and also would consider defending death penalty cases.

Or maybe work in legal aide making $20,000/year. But as long as I'm happy.

Constitutional law, how interesting...

You should talk to my brother in law. That was his interest also. He has

two law degrees, and did an interesting paper on the amero.

Not too many attorneys out there are familiar with constitutional law.

Good luck, I hope that you do get to pursue this avenue of study.

Yep, $500,000 invested in stocks would give you about $50,000 annual income forever.
I'd take that :)

Two million would do nicely, and I would move to South or Central America, spend

my golden years bird watching, growing a permaculture garden, seeing as much

of the planet's natural wonders as I possibly could, and helping support some

group to protect the environment.

Specializes in Home Health, Geriatrics.

If I could win enough money to pay off all of my bills and have that same income each year, I would retire in a heart beat. My notice would probably be a post card from some tropical island. I would need at least $100,00 per year for the rest of my life. I love nursing, but I've been in it long enough where I look forward to doing something different and spending more time doing the things I enjoy as a hobby right now. I will win the lottery one of these days!:lol2:

100,000 is not nearly enough. That would not even buy a house in my part of the country much less somewhere with a high cost of living. Forbes magazine recently had an article said you need to save 5,000,000 for retirement. I wouldn't need 5 but 2,000,000 invested would probably do it. Would keep my license current though even if it is only a couple of years until I can really retire.

Specializes in geriatric, hospice, med/surg.

Mikethe rn: How do you know the return would be so concrete if investing in stocks? I don't know anything at all about the stock market, etc. but how can one predict it doesn't turn way down or way up on any given day? I'm confused. Also, why aren't you an investment broker rather than a nurse?! LOL!

Funny this came up. A classmate and I were talking about this Friday and I said bye bye school! Then I thought about it, I would be unhappy because I was not persuing my dream and I would have to return.
