How much should I get?

Published

I was offered a job today as a IV therapy Nurse at a clinic. I have a AAS degree in Nursing and have my RN license. I was told that the experienced nurse I will be working under is getting about $20/hr. I was offered $10 and 3months probation to ask for an increase. I told them I wanted $12/hr but should I be asking for more? I only have 2 months experience administering Flu Vaccines. I have been looking for a job for 6+months. I don't want to settle for this little. While working as a Flu Nurse I got $35/hr. This is a big decrease but it is a full time job. What should I do?

If the agency is trying to short-change you that much, I would be highly skeptical about all of their other practices. They might not think twice about putting you in situations that are very risky for your license. I live in a midwest metro area that has a cost of living far lower than NYC. New grad hospital RNs start here around $21/hour day shift ($25 night shift) with regular pay increases. I would run away from that agency. Maybe you could consider commuting or moving a bit outside the city? Smaller suburbs/towns are less stuck on the BSN-or-bust bandwagon (or insisting on experience).

I agree with all the posts here. $10.00 an hr for a clinic in NY? Something doesn't sound right. I don't know any RN who makes 10.00 an hr, LPN'S with no experience start at more than 10.00. You may want to rethink the offer. Wishing you the best.

10.00/hr for a RN is a disgrace to even offer with all the education, responsibility and accountability you have. I would have asked if they were joking:lol2: !!!!!!

I agree with the other posts...$10/hr is NOT WORTH the risk...I would take a minimum wage non-nursing job before I would risk my license for a company who wants a half-price deal for nursing services! good luck with your continuing job search:)

Oh my gracious. Reading this post about only being offered $10.00 per hour makes me so very greatful for the job and wage I have. I am a Registered Practical Nurse in Ontario Canada (similar to LPN except our program is a full two years in length. My current wage is close to $30.00 per hour, mind you I work on a med surg unit at a general hospital. For an RN to only make $10.00 it is just too crazy!

Wow, that is what I make as a nurse assistant right now... I know some hospitals in my area that even pay nurse assistant's more than 10 an hour... I'm in nursing school, and if that's what I have to look forward to, then what was the point in going to school??? I'd say that is waaaay too low, even in the lower end of the spectrum for new RN's.

Wooohooohoohoo! This is a joke, right? Because I make WWWAAAAAAAYYYY more than that as a CNA in a hospital in NC.

Yup-me too. I made $14/hr working as a CNA while I was in nursing school.

I would have to agree with the others here. $10/hr is LESS than what I was making as a CNA. NYC should at least be one of the highest paying area next to Cali. What are the hours like??

IV skills are highly prized. What meds would you be administering?

I smell a rat! What company thinks you are worth 10 bucks an hour for this??

Run,,, don't walk away from this "scam".

I was told this was for deficiency in any vitamins they'd be lacking based on blood work. Hours are 9-5 or 9-6. I studied hours to get through nursing school. I did not expect this outcome when I first started in the nursing field. Even current nursing grads I am in contact with are informing me they are not getting any responses from hospitals, clinics or nursing homes. The economy is tough, but I do not want to settle for less. I would like to at least get some compensation for getting this far. I even informed him I was not comfortable receiving this wage considering I received that amount working in retail.

This is a major scam. it has to be. i live in Northern NJ. $10/hr? I made more temping as an administrative assistant in my last semester of nursing school. The CNA's make more than that here.

IV therapy is an area they typically hire skilled nurses into. And at about $30/hr to start.

No benefits?! Go to starbucks and work full-time and you will get benefits!

Keep looking. Keep up with the flu shot clinics. That's decent money!
