How many hours a week are you in class, lab or clinical?

Published

I'm not in nursing yet, but I hope to be next Fall. I was looking at the nursing classes offered at my school and I'm surprised to see that 1st year, 1st semester nursing students have 14 hours of nursing classes per week, while 1st year, 2nd semester students only have 4 hours of class per week! Maybe lab and clinical hours increase a lot the second semester. I guess this would make sense.

So I'm wondering how other people's school's work. How many hours a week do you have class, clinicals and lab? Are you taking other (non-nursing) classes at the same time that increases your time in class?

3rd semester of an ADN program

4 hours lecture a week ( 2 per day )

13 hours of clinical.

We do not have lab, all of our lab skills were taught in 1st year, except one. Starting IV's. We will do that next semester

You all make me jealous. We have class/clinical Monday through Friday. Lecture days are from 8:30 - 4:30 and clinical days are 6:30 - 3:00. We have clinicals Monday, Thursday, and Fridays this rotation.

Lecture - 5 hours a week, one 1 hour lecture and two 2 hour lectures (attendance not mandatory, but highly recommended)

Media Lab-Computer Assisted Learning and Videos 1 hour a week (often takes less time though and not mandatory)

The following all have mandatory attendance:

Clinicals-8 hours a week on one single day

Campus Lab - 1 hour (taught a new skill each week)

Skills Lab - 1 hour (practice a new skill in a smaller group)

All together it is 16 hours a week. This is for a 9 credit nursing fundamentals class for an ADN program. I still manage to work full time, I just never have a day off and do alot of studying at work.

24 hours of clinical and 14 hrs class and lab time this semester per week.

class + clinicals + driving to and from clinicals = about 35 hours per week

i'm about to be through with clinicals for the semester, though, so it'll drop to 17 hours per week for the last couple of weeks of the semester (and the first couple of weeks were 17 hour weeks, too!)

i'm in my 3rd semester of BSN school out of 4

I'm about to start a 9 week term of Fundamentals & Pharmacology which is 5 hours (7am-12pm) Fundamentals lecture, 5 hours (7am-12pm) Pharmacology, & 10 hours (7am-5:30pm) Fundamentals Lab.

Next 9 week term I have: Intro to Med/Surg which is 5 hour lecture, 5 hour lab, & 8 hour clinical I think & Physical Assessment is 5 hour lecture.

I know our clinicals eventually get up there between 12 & 18 hour clinicals but our lectures are always 5 hours.

I'm in an Accelerated BSN program, 2nd semester. On average, I have 30 hours of clinicals/week and 10 hours of class. So that's 40 hours/week of class and clinicals...wow, putting it into hours like that really does emphasize the fact that it's a full time job. That's JUST class and clinicals. I have to write on average about 3 care plans/week, plus essays, homework, projects, and oh, yeah...studying! I'm not even going to try to calculate those hours...too depressing!

I'm in a BSN program, this is my first semester of nursing coursework. My nursing classes only take up about 9 hours of week, and my clinical this semester is only 4 hours (one day a week). So my schedule isn't too bad. Next semester I will be in class for 18 hours a week, and clinical will be 8 hours. Of course homework, care plans, papers, and pre-planning for clinical and practicing skills take up a lot of time too.

I'm in an ADN program I don't remember how long I was in class for fundamentals. I do know the first six weeks we had lab for five hours on friday. We had clinical for eight hours. My second semester I'm in now we had OB for class an hour and a half and clinical for four hours. My med surg class we have lec for two and a half hours and clinical for five hours. I hope this helps.

Without factoring in studying or any of the extra stuff that I do for nursing school, I spend about 4 hours in lecture a week and between 12-36 in clinical depending on my preceptor's schedule.

But I'm also in my final semester and only taking one theory class.

Class = 12 hours / wk

Clinicals = 14 hours / wk

I'm in my 1st semester. Next semester will add on about 4 hours of class/lab time and I think we will do the same for clinicials--not sure.
