What do you think about 12 hour shift clinicals?

Haven't done em yet. Will start next month. Our first semester we did 2 8hrs. For next semester we had the option to choose 2 8s or 1 12 per week. I chose to do the 12 hr. So we'll see how it goes. I liked the idea of getting up @ 5 am 1 day out of the week instead of 2! LOL

as a preceptor I can say it helps the student understand more about the career they have chosen. You will be tired. You need to see how difficult it is to think about several people's welfare for that long. Good luck with your education!

I don't think we have 12hr shifts as students-- the only nurses that work 12hr shifts are ICU nurses- the rest are on 8 hours.

We did 12 hour clinicals our senior year- sometimes several per week. There are things you learn during 12 hours shifts that you can't learn in shorter shifts. How to plan your entire day, how to prioritize patient care, admissions and discharges are usually later, post-op patients are transfered in the afternoons, usually, etc. It also gives you a feel for what nursing is really like.

12 hours as a student? That would suck.
As an employee I want to do 12's. That's one of the motivators for nursing I think (lol)...working three or four 12 hour shifts a week.

Didnt do tweleves until the last semester. I loved it. Gets you a little better idea of what it is really like on the floor. Multiple pts, not enough time, doctors going crazy writing orders. Stuff you dont get to see sometimes on the short shifts

The only thing I would not like is the amount of time it would take away from studying for exams and completing assignments. Two twelves plus three days of work in a week doesn't leave much time for the constant grind of nursing school.

I don't particularly care for 12 hour clinicals, but it is what it is. 12 hours is the best representation for what we'll be experiencing in the real world of nursing.
